Local community group

UNIA

http://asociacion-unia.es/recursos/logo-225x225.png Founded in 1993, the same year as the university itself, UNIA is the oldest student association on the campus. Its history includes highlights like the first university newspaper (fully managed by students), the first computing magazine and the organization of several conferences and exhibitions regarding computing. These days the main activities are about:

  • Club .Net, local university group on Microsoft and .Net technologies
  • EESTEC JLC Almería, local representation of the international EESTEC federation
  • «Tecnoinquietos» radio broadcast
  • OSL-UNIA, a «free software bureau» managed by UNIA.

In 2016 UNIA organized, with the national Python association, the national Python congress PyConES 2016, a three-days congress hosting 400 attendants in the university spaces.

At this moment we are organizing other OSS related congresses: the international Akademy 2017 and the domestic GeoCamp 2017.

UNIA is an incorporated organization registered and fulfilling all the government requirements to operate economical activities, issue invoices, managing a bank account and a VAT number.

Both UNIA and HackLab Almería maintain excellent relations with the local university, especially through the Department of Computing Sciences. We keep a two-way collaboration, particularly supporting and collaborating in the organization of activities and events.

This proposal is formally issued by the UNIA association, offering all the legal and operative infrastructure. The organization itself would be managed by UNIA and HackLab Almería members.

HackLab Almería

The main technology community group in Almería city and province, is HackLab Almería. This works as a «fluent organization» not formally incorporated but acting as umbrella, meeting point and catalyst for the region. And around the Hacklab, there are some other groups, like the Google GDG local groups, Android developers, the pythonist club, the Linux club; and some others like the Free Hardware group, Women and Technology, and Data Journalists.

In its four years of existence, HackLab Almería has organized two hackathons with great public success, two JamToday events –videogames and games creation journals–, two “Tecnoencuentros” –an education robotic competition–, and three “Jornadas Hacklab Almería”, an annual local congress about several themes related to technology and Free Software. And dozens of other minor activities with impact in the local news.

Furthermore, the Hacklab collaborates with ccALM, a film and arts festival around Creative Commons and some other activities or local conferences organized by third parts.

HackLab Almería has strong ties with UNIA —the computer sciences student’s association from the University of Almería—.
