We need to drop the dependency on icon-naming-utils

  • Disable i-n-u during development cycles and file bugs against modules.
  • Make sure to announce this so people know they should file bugs about problems that appear

Jakub and Rodney to look into.

GTK+ stock item names vs. icon-spec names (related to previous point)

  • Need to make GTK+ map the spec-names to the stock item names.
  • Make sure the spec names get priority before the stock names.

Vincent to talk to GTK+ developers.

Icon theme inheritage

  • The way it works in gnome currently is that even if your current theme has generic type icons, specific mimetypes will be taken from inherited theme
  • We don't want it to work like that.
  • Rodney said AlexanderLarsson was looking into it.

Rodney to investigate the status.

How to deal with HighRes

  • 256x256 icons. Lots and lots of work apparently. :)

  • Want to start of with the basic stuff.
  • 256x256 vs. scalable 48x48 canvas. Where to set the threshhold?

Lapo and Jimmac will look into

One canvas per icon

  • All sizes in one file.
  • Much better work flow according to Jakub.
  • Exporting to individual files in the end. Currently done with a ruby script. Can be done during installation.

Jakub and Rodney to look into. Lapo volunteered to convert the current gnome-icon-theme icons.

New emblems

  • A lot of the current emblems look dated and non-polished.
  • A lot of us was wondering how much the current function made sense. What is it for, and for whom?
  • Kalle wanted to visually update them.
  • Rodney didn't want to add them to icon-naming-spec.

Kalle to update the emblems. Andreas to check with UI person what we need emblems for.

Color Schemes

  • Color variations of themes.
  • Benjamin and Giuseppe was working on it. Needed to figure out the UI details for it.
  • To the end user, it displays like a regular theme.
  • Might be done for 2.24

Benjamin and Giuseppe to look into the UI details. Hylke will create some color schemes.

Dark widget theme

  • We really want to include this
  • Have some candidates already.

Hylke and Jakub to look into.

Flat widget theme

  • Lapo suggested a flat widget theme
  • Andreas suggested Gilouche could be a candidate.
  • Lapo wanted something even flatter.

Lapo and Benjamin looking into using the Sugar engine/theme.

Compact theme

  • GNOME works bad on smaller screens
  • Smaller clearlooks variants exists
  • Icon scaling could be a issue.
  • Could turn off icons in menus and buttons, to save even more space.

Wallpapers

  • Some of abstract wallpapers in gnome-backgrounds are starting to get old (ie. we can draw better these days).
  • Need new abstract and transparent wallpapers
  • Want to make it possible to pick up the widget theme color as a background color alternative.

Andrea to look into it. Benjamin to look into UI solution for it.

Monochrome icons in the status bar

  • Looks cleaner.
  • Worth looking into and testing.
  • Kenneth at Canonical have some stuff in the works.
  • Rodney had some concerns. We're (ie. GNOME) too flexible, so our hands are tied, basically
  • Hylke had some suggestions on how to make the status bar look nicer with smaller icons.

Andreas and Garrett will look into it.

Hard to keep track of graphics request from developers

  • Currently spread out into bugzilla, mailing lists request and individual requests to artists.
  • Fedora have a design que that worked out great for that team. http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Artwork/DesignService

  • Some of the icon requests don't make sense from a UI point of view. How to deal with this?

Mizmo and Andreas will look into wiki page on live.gnome.org. Andreas to check if we can get UI people into the discussion.

Ran out of time

  • The meeting was quite long.
  • Ended with everyone being tired/hungry, or having dinner already.
  • Will continue the meeting soon again
