Initial GNOME 3 versions rewamped the way we start and interact with our machines. Now is the next step. Polishing and delivering apps that makes a complete experience.

HiDPI Some interesting things have happened in the hardware space the last couple of years. One of them being touch capabilities on regular laptops getting more and more common and the other the rise of high resolution displays. For a long time laptops screens were stuck at resoultions of around 1200-1600 for 13-15 inch laptops, but recently it's been more and more common with screens that sport 2560 or even 3200. These screens are intended to run in HiDPI mode, with the intent of using the double amount of pixels to display smoother graphics and fonts. The support for this up until now on Linux have been quite poor. Instead of smoother graphics, objects on the screen have just been tiny and hard to hit with a mouse or touchpad. Alexander Larsson wanted to fix this and thanks to a donated Chromebook Pixel laptop from Brion Vibber he sat down and did the needed changes across the stack. The work needed modifications not only in the GNOME shell and GTK+, but also in X, Wayland, Cairo and Clutter. The inital support was added in 3.10 and rounded out in 3.12. Something about Wayland at the end.

Applications In the software space, the increased usage of cloud storage have lead to people expecting that they will have access to the same content across their devices. In order to meet this requierment, the project have done an intitiative for the last couple of releases to create a whole suite of applications that complements the shell. They can use both local and online storage, who's sources are controlled in Online Accounts. These applications also drive the shell search so any content is just some keystrokes away. Ability to control their notifications have also been added to system settings. In addition to these there has been a number of utilities apps and a Software Installer in order to find new software.

Documents was introduced already in GNOME 3.4 but got a good amount of updates.

Photos can use both Facebook and Flickr.

Documents and Contacts introduced in 3.4 Clocks, Maps, Software, Notes, Weather.

Privacy In the wake of the privacy breach revelations made the last couple of years, it became evident that any modern Operating System should respect your privacy and allow for your saftey. Privacy speerheader Jacob Applebaun keynoted at GUADEC 2012 and GNOME shortly after started a privacy fundraiser campaign to gather money. The 3.8 and 3.10 releases brought controls for Screen lock, Usage & History, Purge trash. Sharing of Screen, Media and remote login.

Universal Access

The relevations in the last couple of years showed that privacy is an important matter.... Jacob Applebaun keynoted at GUADEC and GNOME ran a privacy fundraiser campaign. Controls for Screen lock, Usage & History, Purge trash. Sharing of Screen, Media and remote login. Support for Owncloud

GNOME should be accessible to all, regardless of their physical, location, language, income... hence input methods and accessability GNOME have historically held accessability to a high standard.
