Focus initiatives
- We should focus on a few initiatives as a team in order not to spread ourselves too thin and so that we can accomplish them. Instead of having newcomers do other things, we should ask for them to help with these focus initiatives so that we can mentor them and still work towards our goals.
- While we will have some focus initiatives, we will still have some "business as usual" items, like social media.
- When we get to GUADEC 2017, we should make sure to hold a session on strategy and planning for the upcoming year. We can try to put together a budget then.
The 3 focus initiatives from now until GUADEC are:
- Annual Report
- SWAG Centers and Events
- 20th Birthday
20th Birthday

LinuxFest NorthWest - Ryan will be attending for System76 and will be willing to hand out GNOME stickers
- Carlos Soriano owns the sticker distribution in Europe
- FOSSNorth will be happening in 2 weeks; some GNOME people speaking; would be great to have stickers to hand out
- Idea: Design postcard / business card to hand out at events to invite people to check out the newcomer's initiative
- More discussion on press releases and social media for publicizing events
- Ryan is happy to help with writing / distribution of press releases
Calendar
- Public calendar of GNOME events / meetings
- Google GNOME calendar exists, but not used outside certain locales
- Lack of manpower in the past to consolidate items on to a calendar
- Tool? Could revamp the Google calendar
ONGOING
(Review and update list of ongoing Engagement team initiatives:https://wiki.gnome.org/Engagement/OngoingInitiatives)
Annual report

SWAG Centers & Events
- Distribution centers around the world for swag requests to be sent out locally
- Want to recruit people to run distribution centers (foundation members vs. anywho who communicates with the engagement team and shows commitment)
- Include something like: If you're not a foundation member and still want to run a distribution center, reach out to the engagement team for help and support
- Identify events near the distrbution center that will be targeted
- ACTION: Reach out to GNOME Asia, GNOME Peru, etc. to start recruiting distributors, reach out to members in India
- About 3 months prior to these events we should reach out to people and see if they can man the booth, make sure people are attending and have a plan
- ACTION: Nuritzi to send an email to engagement-list and foundaiton-list to see if people have others that they target
- ACTION: Biraj to add FOSS Asia to the 2018 list
Recipe hackathon all over the world
- Could be great to do worldwide
Could we make this a competition? Most popular recipe as voted by Allan.
- ACTION: Biraj start to think about how this would work. Biraj to go through the process of submitting one recipe successfully and then thinking about how we scale it.
Social Media
- Not ready to start new channels (i.e. instagram, snapchat, etc.) but may want to consider this in the future
- ACTION: Reach out to Federico and Alberto for photos at the hackfest in late March
- ACTION: Allan will archive photos that he took at the GTK hackfest in London
- ACTION: Reach out to travel committee to request photos when someone travels
@Cassandra - Set up a Flicker group for GNOME Project: https://www.flickr.com/groups/gnomesocial
COMPLETED
November Bug Squash
- Alexandre Franke initiative lead
- Wiki pages with the details
Tasks for Engagment Newcomers
Newcomers Tasks: https://wiki.gnome.org/Engagement/GettingInvolved/NewcomersTasks
- ACTION: All of us should try to add things
- This was closed in favor of focus initiatives on April 14th. We can ask newcomers to help us with the focus initiatives.
UNIX Stickers
- ACTION: Nuritzi to get back to them with color update - Completed in late March
STALLED PROJECTS
Google ads (Rosanna)
- Found their website (google.com/grants)
- We'd need to write a blurb and maintain keywords for them
- Would need pruning/maintainence every quarter or so
- Sri was going to check in with Justin to see if he has interest in handling this (email sent asking)
Promote Engagement meetings
- Perhaps intimidating for newcomers?
- Public meeting once a month?
- Hangouts on air
- Need a list of things people can do
- Recruit people!
- Target designers etc?
- All - think up some examples of short tasks for newcomers
- Possibly make better use of the engagement blog (TIL: there's an engagement blog)
Promote Friends of GNOME
- Neil to check with Tobi if we just get a list of email addresses or need to use a system === Create Official Groups ===
- submit an application, having established trust (foundation member takes a look)
- list the official groups on a wiki or something (think about adding a section to the gnome.org website to create more visibility around local groups)
- They should:
- have at least one event a year
- gnome release parties strongly encouraged
- take part in social media-stuff (hashtags when their events are happening)
ARCHIVED
Engagement Budget
- List of conferences (will go on wiki) with estimated cost to better allocate funding for budget
Some conferences listed at top of notes from Feb 10: https://wiki.gnome.org/Engagement/TeamMeetings/10-FEB-2017
- ACTION: Send out email to engagement list to see which conferences will be attended
This Week in GNOME
- Sri, John (mrmcq2u), Kunaal (kunaaljain)
Main initiative page: https://etherpad.gnome.org/p/this_week_in_gnome_2016
Extensions
Mario Wenzel (maweki) looked into this and wrote a page about the future of extensions: https://wiki.gnome.org/Projects/GnomeShell/Extensions/Future
- Notes from before:
- Need to talk to core developers about extensions/implementing extension functionality (ex. GNOME weather w/ weather indicator)
- Get the design team to give guidelines for extension developers - "do's" and "don'ts" since currently there isn't enough information on how to support extensions (esp. common use cases like indicators, status-menu-panels)
Already talked to Jakub during GUADEC with a mixed response ("extensions are >the wild west<, we didn't design it, we don't want to imply that this is ok")
- Create a wiki page for extensions and extension community stuf
- Would be nice to establish a mailing list for extensions #gnome-shell
Current page for Extensions: https://wiki.gnome.org/Projects/GnomeShell/Extensions/StepByStepTutorial#knowingGnomeShell-API
