GNOME Keyboard Shortcuts

{i} Note: These are the default shortcut keys for GNOME. To change them go to System > Preferences > Keyboard Shortcuts.

General Shortcut Keys

F1

Opens the help browser for the selected application or, if no applications open, GNOME help

Up/Down/Left/Right

Moves the focus between items.

Return (Enter)

Selects an item

Esc

Unselects an Item or closes an open menu

Panel Shortcut Keys

Alt + F1

Open the Application menu

Alt + F2

Open the Run dialog

Alt + F6

Open GNOME Terminal

Ctrl + Alt + Tab

Opens Panel Switcher dialog. Release to select a Panel

Ctrl + Alt + Escape

Cycle between Panels backwards. Release to select a Panel

Shift + F10

Opens the context menu for the selected panel.

Tab

Switches the focus between objects on a panel.

Workspace Shortcut Keys

Ctrl + Alt + Up/Down/Left/Right

Switch to Workspace up/down/left/right

Ctrl + Shift+ Alt + Up/Down/Left/Right

Move the active window to the Workspace up/down/left/right

F10

Opens the first menu on the left side of the menubar.

Alt + Tab

Open Window Switcher dialog. Release to select a window.

Close active window

Alt + F5

Unmaximise active window

Alt + F7

Move active window

Resize active window

Minimise active window

Ctrl + Alt + D

Show the Desktop. Minimise all visible windows

Move the active window to the Workspace up/down/left/right

Alt + Up

Open parent folder

Alt + Down

Open file or folder

Open parent folder, closing the current window.

Open file or folder, closing the current window .

Ctrl + L

Open a location by entering a path.

Ctrl + Shift + W

Close all parent folders

Double-click + Ctrl

Open file or folder, closing the current window.

Middle-click

Open file or folder, closing the current window

Begin typing a word
