Echo (Notifications)

Lately Wikimedia introduced Echo, a notifications project within its infrastructure. It would be interesting to have a way to integrate it within GNOME, for example through telepathy.

Commons

Desktop/Lock Screen Background

One obvious use that the GNOME environment could provide ta take advantage of Wikimedia Commons is to offer to use high quality images stored there as background image changing through time. There's a "picture of the day" that may fit the selection process. More specific solution may include creating a "GNOME background" category on Commons.

Uploading

Currently there seems to be no upload tool to commons integrated with the GNOME environment. Standalone desktop applications exists, but thy don't use GNOME technologies, don't follow anything close to the GNOME Human Interface Guidelines.

Here are some idea on what could be implemented:

  • GNOME Online Accounts (GOA) enabling:
    • drag and drop within File
    • upload directly from image viewers
  • a standalone desktop applications

The latter may be relevant as you usually don't just upload a file to Commons, you also want to add comments, categories, licenses and credits information. This kind of tool is especially interesting in batch mode, so it's interesting to have a "session" where you give only once all this information for all the concerned files. Some kind of template can also be interesting.
