Requirements for the next GNOME Translation Tool (GTT)

  • Kbabel style panes
    • Why is this a requirement? I like the poEdit layout better, it's much simpler. - ReinoutVanSchouwen

  • The application should be able to download a file from svn
    • Is this really high priority? l10n.gnome.org now displays PO files at most five minutes old, and they are even synced with the latest POT file for the module? DaniloSegan

      • Then, it should be able to download a file from DL? to download a file from a website is quite easy - JorgeGonzalez

  • The application should have a glossary divided into categories
  • The application should have a dictionary
  • The application should use translation memories
    • Import translation memories from KBabel
    • Import translation memories from poEdit
    • Export translation memories
      • (also in TMX format?)
        • But poEdit and KBabel translation memory databases are very different structures. Should we reimplement each engine? - PedroDeMedeiros

  • The application should be able to suggest strings
  • The application should show a visual diff (meld like)
  • The application should render a po into XML when a manual is being translated
    • This is what we have po2xml for, isn't it? - ReinoutVanSchouwen

      • Yes, gnome-doc-utils/xml2po handles this. DaniloSegan

        • But xml2po is manual, and uses the console, and new translators are not used to it. Besides it doesn't work well with some manuals (for example, evolution) - JorgeGonzalez

  • The application should have keyboard shortcuts for:
    • Previous/Next fuzzy
    • Previous/Next untranslated
    • Check accelerators
    • Check syntaxis
    • Check arguments
    • Copy msgid to msgstr
    • Toggle fuzzy status
  • Output POs should use the same spacing and line-break conventions as gettext's commandline tools (e.g. msgmerge). This will make reading diffs of the files easier in general.
