Stroke-based input methods utilize the shape of Chinese characters. Chinese characters do not have uniform and consistent patterns in general. So different stroke-based systems extract different features from Chinese characters.

There are many stroke-based systems exist, some even patented. In addition, There may be many variations in each system. Sometimes stroke is even mixed with phone in input methods.
