GUADEC Games

Students that are first timers at GUADEC should integrate in a playful way to the community. Let us use a game.

Game mechanics

  • ✔ Students get together in teams of 4 or 5
  • ✔ Teams get succesive tasks, they do not get a new one completing the last one
  • ✔ Every task demands some kind of video or photo proof
  • ✔ There is a time limit until Saturday 28th, 12hrs (AGM day)
  • ✔ (if possible) Some kind clues are in key talks (minimum complicity with speakers)

Rules (what to do)

  • GAME MASTER: Diego Escalante Urrelo (diegoe@gnome.org)

  • You have to deliver in person or by email. The sooner the better.
  • VIDEO can be any resolution, 1280x720 preferred, please refrain from anything below 640x480. Any codec is ok.
  • PHOTOS should be around or above 3000px wide (check your camera settings, usually "Large" setting is enough).
  • CAMERA: Every group should have at least one, otherwise you will have to trade members with another group.
  • You should deliver your completed tasks to the GAME MASTER as soon as possible. In person or by email.

Points (how do we win?)

  • Completed tasks are 100 points
  • First team to complete a task get 50 extra points (completing means delivering your results to the GAME MASTER)
  • Delivering your results in person gets you 30 extra points

Suggestions (win easier!)

  • A short "Sorry, $person, can you spare a minute?" or "Hi, $person?, are you busy too busy now?" is good enough to start a conversation.
  • Don't be afraid to ASK or introduce yourself.
  • Most people will be aware of the games, so they will not mind sparing a minute to help.
  • Above all: be respectful and mind your TIMING.

The challenges (go nuts)

  • #1 VIDEO: record 2 GNOME hackers saying what was their first GUADEC and their favorite thing from it in 3 words ("Istanbul, 2008, the great food!", "Birmingham, 2007, the etap lobby!")
    • CAN NOT REPEAT: you should ask the if he/she has been on tape already by some other team
    • Be careful not to be too far away from the subject so audio is clear.
    • Make each video around 15 or 25 seconds.
    • DELIVER: The 2 unedited video files
  • #2 PHOTO: Photograph as many GUADEC t-shirts (different years) as possible
    • Include the hacker face of course!
