Location Hackfest

London, Date: May 23-25 2014

Primary contact: ZeeshanAli

Description

Over the past 1 year, we have been working on making GNOME location-aware, in the form of a new geolocation framework, a new (reverse)-geocoding library and a brand new Map application. We also now have simple controls for enabling/disabling geolocation in GNOME Shell. Not only we'd like to improve this control in next release of GNOME, it would be really nice to also ensure that KDE and Jolla folks have everything they need to be able to also make use of our location frameworks. (KDE and Jolla already uses geoclue but not the new and completely different geoclue2). Since we rely heavily on Mozilla Location Services, it would be nice to have at least 1 person from that team present so we can synchronize with their plans. While we are roaming around in London, it'd be nice to get some mozstumbling done to improve our geolocation database.

Agenda, goals

  • Sync with our designers of how location UIs should look like in GNOME 3.14
  • Implement location UIs for GNOME 3.14
  • Sync with KDE and Jolla folks
  • KDE and Jolla folks port from geoclue1 to geoclue2
  • Ensure KDE and Jolla have everything they need in geoclue2 and geocode-glib (or help them write they own geocoding implementation in case we can't convince them to us our library).
  • Sync with Mozilla Location Service developers about their plans
  • All participants with Android phones ensure they keep mozstumber scanning and submitting data during their visit
  • Start working on a better coordinate → timezone service for automatic timezone changing. (MattiasBengtsson)
