1. Developer Experience Hackfest, 2015
Collabora, Cambridge, England: 25–29 January 2015
Primary contact: PhilipWithnall <philip tecnocode co.uk>
Secondary contact: AllanDay
1.1. Relevant GNOME team
GTK+, GLib, documentation developers
1.2. Description
Following on from the successful 2014 DX hackfest, this event aims to continue the tradition of pushing forward roadmaps for the toolkit and developer experience. This year’s event will be co-hosted with a documentation hackfest, allowing some crossover between developer and user documentation planning.
The hackfest will be held immediately before FOSDEM, giving people a day to travel over to Brussels afterwards.
People will be jumping in and out of #dev-x on irc.gnome.org; the docs team will be on #docs on the same server.
1.3. Goals
As with last year’s event, all aspects of the GNOME application developer experience are in scope, including:
- GTK+ — roadmap for the toolkit, discussion on what new features are required and a timetable for their execution, GL work
Tools — including Builder, editors, Glade, DevHelp and so on.
- Developer documentation — generated API reference docs, hand-written tutorials and the developer centre website.
- Apps work and application templates
Co-located work with the docs hackfest
The central aim of this hackfest is to agree on an actionable plan for the next year for each area of the developer experience, including a GTK+ roadmap, a continued plan for Builder, and continued integration of the GL work in GTK+.
1.4. Schedule
People are free to arrive earlier or leave later, and spend time in the office hacking on things. A tentative schedule:
- 25th: Introduction, coordinating up with the docs team
- 26th: GTK+ roadmap
- 27th: Builder roadmap
- 28th: Apps planning
29th: Left free for later scheduling
1.5. Agenda
Specific items to address during the hackfest (feel free to add to the list), which should be taken as a measure of success:
Come up with an official story about if/how apps are supposed to interact with the theme for styling custom widgets. See also https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=732959.
