1. Design Tools Hackfest 2020 (virtualized)
Update March 16th: Due to the COVID-19 situation we're cancelling the in-person event. We still want to work remotely on some of this throughout the week though, see below.
Primary contact: TobiasBernard, JakubSteiner
1.1. Date
Loosely around Tuesday, March 24 - Friday, March 27
1.2. Location
Remote, using a Matrix room for chat and Bluejeans for video calling.
1.3. Description
Planning what's next for GNOME design tools (and underlying technologies)
1.3.1. Agenda, goals
The basic vision for the app icon workflow we laid out in 2018 is now a reality. On the symbolic side we're close to being able to replace the old ruby scripts with fancy new tooling, but not quite there yet. This hackfest is about tying up loose ends and planning for the future of our icon tooling, as well as some GTK-related things like more easily recolorable widgets and icons.
- Big picture planning for the third party designer/developer experience around icons
- Improve Symbolic Preview (e.g. make icon sets work well, add export, and everything else we need to replace the render scripts)
- GTK widget recoloring API, more color variables, etc.
- Fix papercut bugs across all design tools
Maybe, as time permits:
- Improve Vector Slicer (e.g. adding more formats than PDF, in-app preview, etc.)
- Work on Lettercase (new font installer/manager)
1.3.2. Schedule
Since it's remote everyone can work on various things flexibly as it works best for them, but to discuss specific topics from the agenda it would be good to have a fixed timeslot.
Tuesday 10:00: State of Design Tools, high level planning for the future
Wednesday 10:00: GTK widget recoloring API
Thursday 10:00: Symbolic Preview, and more generally the future of GTK symbolic icons
All times are Germany/Central Europe time.
1.3.3. Code of Conduct
As for all GNOME-related events, the GNOME Events Code of Conduct and CodeOfConduct/PhotographyPolicy apply.
Any violations of either should be submitted to the event organizers (see above) or the GNOME Code of Conduct Committee
