BoFs information

  • A11yCamp, July 30th and 31st. Coordinators: Alejandro Piñeiro, Joanmarie Diggs, Juanjo Marín. A11yCamp a single-day (at most) unconference designed to help improve GNOME Accessibility wherever we can. This includes, but is not limited to automated testing, bug triaging, design, hacking on accessibility, hacking and ensuring accessibility, marketing and more. Quite a few members of the GNOME Accessibility Team will be present at this year's GUADEC. So let's take advantage of us all being in the same place to get stuff done. Note: We also hope to make participation remotely available via at least IRC.

  • Zeitgeist hackfest, July 30th and 31st. Coordinator: SeifLotfy. The Zeitgeist team will have a heavy presence during GUADEC. Since Empathy will be depending on Zeitgeist via Folks, and some other applications such as "Yelp" are showing interest in deploying Zeitgeist features, we would like to cease the opportunity to fix and tweak whatever is still needed for GNOME 3.6 and plan for GNOME 3.8. Our work will be divided in 50% GNOME specific work and planning for (Folks, Yelp, Web and general search sorting for Shell) and 50% Zeitgeist Engine related development.

  • GNOME OS bof/hackfest, July 30th. Coordinator: XanLopez: We feel it would be good to sit together and try to clarify and define more clearly what GNOME OS and how we'll get there. Is there a set of goals shared by the community that we could clarify and publicize as the stated objectives of GNOME as a project for the medium and long term future? If so, can be define long term roadmaps towards that objective and try to clarify what are our resources and how to best put them to work to fulfill this goal? If you want to talk about GNOME as complete OS, core applications, technologies, application stores and world domination you are welcome to attend.

  • WebKitGTK+ and Epiphany bof/hackfest, July 31st. Coordinator: JuanjoSanchezPenas

  • PyGObject hackfest, July 30th. Coordinator: Martin Pitt. Details and Agenda. If you are developing GObject-introspection based Python applications and have some problems with PyGObject, this is the time and place to get to know each other, getting bugs fixed, learn about pygobject's innards, or update libraries to become introspectable. Martin will have a list of easy things to look into if you are interested in learning about and getting involved in PyGObject's development.

  • Translation project BoF, July 31st. Coordinator: PetrKovar. The GNOME Translation Project BoF at GUADEC 2012 is an opportunity to present and discuss current issues about the Project, and to meet other GNOME translators and Project and gtranslator contributors to share knowledge and best practices in GNOME localization. The BoF agenda includes: localization and documentation writing sprint, various QA issues (for example, string freezes), usage of various translation tools, gtranslator hackfest.

  • Messaging for Free Software Groups and Projects, July 30th, 10:00. Coordinator: Deb Nicholson. Are you interested in refining your message and more effectively sharing your excitement about your? It's easy to talk with people who already "get" you, but how do you open the conversation with someone new? What kind of "message" are you already sending about your group or project and how can you improve it? Messaging starts with relatively easy stuff like your elevator pitch and an FAQ and becomes more advanced when you start thinking strategically about combating negative stereotypes and constantly soliciting feedback. We'll discuss meeting people part way, using inclusive terms and images, and understanding your audience. This workshop is for anyone who wants to make sure that what's awesome about their project is shining through to potential new users and contributors.

  • Community Organizing for Free Software Activists, July 30th, 11:00. Coordinator: Deb Nicholson. This workshop is designed to help free software activists re-purpose strategies used in more traditional community organizing. We'll discuss some of the larger issues of perception and messaging and then drill down into very specific tactics for growing your free software group or project, with particular emphasis on how to diversify the type of participants you attract. For project leads, user group folks and anyone else who considers themselves a free software activist.

  • The Geary email client and library, July 30th, 12:00. Coordinator: Jim Nelson. Geary is a new GNOME email client being developed by the Yorba Foundation. Its goals are to be lightweight, easy to use, and fully integrated with the GNOME desktop and GTK 3. The user interface is completely separate from the email library with the plan that the library can be reused in other applications or on other platforms. Today Geary only supports IMAP. Future plans are to support other messaging protocols, including non-RFC822 sources (such as RSS or even messages from web-based services).

  • The GNOME Desktop in Trisquel, not taking things for granted, July 30th, 16:00. Coordinator: Rubén Rodríguez. The Trisquel GNU/Linux distribution, being strongly committed towards software freedom and user inclusion, required in its latest release to make many modifications to the GNOME 3 desktop to make it accessible (as in screen reader compatibility) and to avoid the requirement for 3D acceleration, which in many cases would push users into installing non-free software.

  • Grilo and its future: roadmap and ideas, July 31st, 10:00. Coordinator: Juan A. Suárez. This BoF will focus on Grilo, a framework which purpose is to provide media application developers with proper tools to access online and offline multimedia. More specifically, Grilo provides: a single, high-level API that abstracts the differences among various media content providers, allowing application developers to browse and search content from various services and sources with little work on the application side, and a collection of plugins for accessing content from various media providers. Developers can share efforts and code by writing plugins for the framework that are application agnostic. A flexible API that allows plugin developers to write plugins of various kinds. Today, Grilo is already being used by various GNOME applications, such as Totem, Rhythmbox or MediaExplorer and it will have even more relevance in the future of the platform, where it is expected to be a key component of the new multimedia applications. During this BoF we will look at the current version of Grilo and try to gather and explore ideas for the framework

  • Input Method BoF, July 31st, 12:00. Coordinator: Daniel Stone. For a subject so simple on the face of it ('enter some text and it appears on the screen'), input methods have been surprisingly controversial lately. The proposal of IBus as the default input method and push for deeper integration with GNOME generated a lot of noise on desktop-devel-list, with many people loudly advocating one framework or the other, or in fact just all frameworks and switchability. We propose to discuss some of the technical issues and pros and cons, taking as a given that deeper integration is strongly desirable, and that due to the complexity of input methods, avoiding multiple frameworks would be a plus. Secondly, Wayland is evolving its input design in many ways, including a proposed wl_text protocol which would integrate a lot of the input method functionality into the compositor. During this BoF the wl_text proposal will be outlined and discussed from a toolkit and system point of view.

  • Empathy, IM and Social hackfest, July 31st, 16:00. Coordinator: Guillaume Desmottes. During this BoF we'll present the recent improvements in Empathy focussing on the redesign effort. We'll discuss future plans including Empathy's redesign and integration of IM and social features in the GNOME desktop.

  • Message Tray and Lock Screen BoF, July 31st. Coordinator: Marina Zhurakhinskaya. During this BoF we will look at the latest status of two major GNOME 3.6 features - Message Tray and Lock Screen. We will discuss how the current designs for them are working out and what requires attention before the next release.

  • GNOME Hispano conference, July 30th and 31st. Coordinator: Javier Hernández. This will be the GUADEC Hispana. All talks here will be in Spanish.

  • Keysigning Session, July 30th. Coordinator: Tobias Mueller. To strengthen the Web of Trust we will have a small Keysigning Party. While we are unfortunately not very good at using OpenPGP, we luckily don't need to prepare much. So there is no need to send your key to anyone or do anything else, really. We just meet up, exchange key material and convince ourselves about our identities.
