Contents suggested

These were the sessions suggested back in Winter 2005. They might be useful to doublecheck if we are missing something relevant.

We want ideas.

  • One Laptop Per Child Project (OLPC)

  • C# - Mono - Java - Python... this debate or these debates.
  • Showcase http://live.gnome.org/GUADEC2006_2fContents?action=edit (avoiding just propaganda) of the big Spanish GNOME-based projects: Linex, Guadalinex, Molinux, Max, Lliurex, SUSE Linux OSS in the Catalan schools + round table / debate of all the responsible on what do they need from GNOME and how could they contribute to GNOME

  • GParts

  • Website improvements: [GnomeWeb]

  • MarketingPersonas

  • Discussion with the main GNOME based distros to see how we can help each other better, and how could they help us in our marketing without harming their marketing, in a useful way for all of us.
  • XFCE or other notable projects using Gtk

  • A debate on going beyond just API documentation and spare tutorial
  • Updating, or just removing outdated parts of the content of developer.gnome.org. Newbies go there to learn things that are sometimes *really* outdated. We need to find an easy way to improve documentation to start hacking on the GNOME Desktop and centralize it. Less wording and more informative content... A step by step guide on live.gnome.org, or changing developper.gnome.org into a wiki, to allow easy update of its content, an splitting all those messy and sometimes redundant tutorials...

  • HumanInterfaceGuidelines (HIG) review and eventual split

  • GNOME portability; it is currently too focused on Linux. Some modules fail badly under the BSDs, losing important functionality of the core desktop. It'd be nice if developers were told about common portability pitfalls and how to solve them.
  • Meet the competition: inviting Microsoft, Mac and KDE developers to show their mid terms visions - in the context of GNOME's ProjectTopaz .

  • Tablet PCs, Smart devices and input device such as tablets support. (There are 8 GTK programms supporting tablets and only 1 KDE/qt program)
    • Maemo platform for Nokia 770 and similar projects.
  • GnomePerformance. Sum up what has been done and what's more could be done.

  • The (possible) use of peer-to-peer technologies for collaborative goals
    • Plans for (and current) support of Zeroconf in GNOME desktop apps
  • The "Web-aware" GNOME debate (started on the planet)
  • Epiphany in the distros (a litle forgotten debate)
  • New functionality in GTK+ and how to use it (instead of e.g. libgnome, libegg)
  • Cairo, what is so cool about it an future plans
  • It would be nice to do some usability testing and "user interface love" hackfests for some applets, programs etc.
  • RealMarketing (not sure about this, feel free to remove this item)

  • Migrating all user files (preferences etc.) from a Windows or Mac systems to Gnome (similar to what OSX and Firefox have done). The average computer users will NOT switch to Gnome without a clear and easy migration path (or help from a geeky friend).
  • Make GnomeOffice complete, polished, and bug-free. Just as Epiphany is like Firefox but simplified and gnomeified, Gnome Office could be like Open Office but simplified and gnomeified. Gnome Office will need significant attention from the community to squash bugs and improve/simplify UIs.

  • OK. All techies know and use GNOME. And they think that it satifies all their needs. OK. Let's do applications for real people. For my mom, my dad, my sister or my girlfriend. What do we need to approach them?
  • Workshops for newbies are always welcome. (see also LocalWorkshops)

  • What happened to the "GNU Network Object Model Environment"? What was? What is? Do we have it? Do we need it? How this relates to Topaz and Web 2.0?
  • Project Portland - http://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/PortlandIntegrationTasks

  • Media on the desktop: What brings new GStreamer? Which apps are ported? What are pending issues for full desktop integration (GStreamer/esd)?

  • Better support for enterprise deployment, things like the Sabayon project, better LDAP integration, etc.

  • A keynote of Joel Spolsky could be very interesting indeed. Or have a short documentary of our community.
