The hotels are withing walking distance from the conference venue. The hostel is a little farther but it's also accessible through the local train system. The Lonely Planet guidebook recommends Hotel Unger (mid-range) and Hotel Steigenberger Graf Zeppelin (top end).

Note: The Lonely Planet guidebook claims that the youth hostel has a curfew at midnight, but that is apparently not true anymore, as has been confirmed with the the youth hostel. They are open 24 hours. The German website of the hostel mentions the same: Die Jugendherberge Stuttgart hat 24 Stunden geöffnet.

The guidebook recommend two budget accomodation which happen to be much near the conference venue (prices may be outdated):

Other hotels some people have recommended:

There is another hostel somehow nearby, with comparable prices to the Stuttgart hostel (getting there and back may cost a little more), if you wish to remain in a hostel but find that the main one in Stuttgart is full. It's the Ludwigsburg hostel (in German), a 17 minute trip on the S-bahn from Stuttgart's main station. Note that as of May 2, this hostel was fully booked for the period of the conference also, but places may become available again because of possible cancellations.

Extra Cheap "Camp"

The Feuerbach "Camp Stuttgart" is on the outside of town (The "Sportpark" U-Bahn stop, on the U6 line). It has dormitories, as you can see in these pictures of Feuerbach. It should cost approximately 30 Euros for 3 nights, from 29th to 31st May, and you must bring a sleeping bag. Travel will cost you about 5 euros per day, and about 20 minutes each way.

Update: There wasn't enough interest, so this has been cancelled. The 6 people who signed up here may get subsidised places at the youth hostel instead. MurrayCumming.

Camping With Tents

There seems to be a camping site near Stuttgart, even with public transport connection: Campingplatz Stuttgart (check the price list). It is near the Wasen river and about 500 meters from Bad Cannstatt S-Bahn station. S-bahn lines S2 and S3 can take you between the camping site and the main station or the airport.
