Session Proposals for Boston Summit 2006

Suggest your own Boston Summit 2006 session, or nominate someone else!

Scheduled

  • Anyone up for a Tango-BOF? (StevenGarrity, JakubSteiner)

  • I'd like to chat about the possibilities of providing custom HAL device icons. Lots of portable devices show up in corresponding applications and on the desktop. It wuld be desirable to have device-specific artwork optionally available with a fallback to the generic icon provided by gnome-icon-theme. (JakubSteiner)

  • Anyone else interested in this dbus service that keeps track of current location (gpsd, plazes.com, or user input or some other method) and then has a dbus api and notification to query it. Then all applications could share the same thing: You could make leaftag add geotags to files created, you could make f-spot do the same for photos (could Turtle be this service? Toshok?) - and you could add coordinates to your blog posts etc. My master plan is that if we had this, planet gnome could have a real hacker map in the top right corner.. :) More info now in GeoClue (TuomasKuosmanen)

Unscheduled

  • Support for ogg vorbis in GNOME gnomebug:94615
  • Topaz brainstorm sessions led by ChristopherBlizzard and HavocPennington (JeffWaugh)

  • OLPC BoF/Hackfest led by ChristopherBlizzard, DanWilliams and MarcoGritti (ChristopherBlizzard)

  • Competition and Cooperation - a quick recap of the talk I will be giving at aKadamy along with a descussion on standards and technology sharing (JohnPalmieri)

  • Making FUSE and GNOME rock together (JeffWaugh, thinking RobertLove would have a lot to say about this)

  • Discussions on designing for a contextural desktop / designing for derivatives ( may pair with tango AndyFitzsimon)

  • GNOME for Sysadmins - I would like to have a BOF/Session on deploying GNOME in a mass desktop sense, specifically talking about gconf, sabayon, and pessulus. I'd like to talk about what common customizations sysadmins deploy in the real world, what works, and what sucks. I also want to touch on the differences between the Red Hat, Novell, and Sun deployment documentation and how it differs from the upstream GNOME Sysadmin Guide (and why four out-of-sync sources of said documentation makes me cry.) For bonus points I think it would be a good idea to talk about things like Fedora Directory Services(FDS) and other low level distribution-specific services, and how they can be integrated into making GNOME Administration suck less. I will be bringing lots of screenshots of administration tools for Windows Server 2003R2, and show how they do their desktop management stuff to compare and contrast where we are and where we need to go. (It would be swell if someone from Novell could show off the edirectory management tools, things like iPrint, etc.) (JorgeCastro)

  • Mario Kart DS playing - throughout the weekend, during most sessions, rudely (StevenGarrity)

  • I'd like to hold a BOF/presentation on our new fully managed (CLR) DBus support - our next generation "C# Bindings" for DBus that implements the DBus specification instead of binding libdbus. more details. (AaronBockover)

  • I'd be interested if developers saw a need for GNOME-y version of KDE's English Breakfast Network and what features would be most helpful, ideas of how to go about it, etc. I've already got a lot of information that can be used to create a more extensive version of such a tool -- specifically with regards to linking up mail lists, bugs, and source code. (PatrickWagstrom)

  • Brainstorming/prototyping task-centric Gnome, as proposed by JonoBacon at this article at ONLamp (wiki-ized version here: GnomeProjectDesktop) and others at ThreePointZero/TheDesktop. First iteration could be simply handling tasks on a per-app basis (through Metacity) and integrating it with Metacity (for simple app tagging) and the Window List applet for simple task selection. Warning: I have very little to go on other than a couple mock-ups and some ideas (and I'm unfamiliar with the code this would have to hook into (Metacity and Window selection applet)). If it doesn't sound like we can be productive going on that, I'll gladly pull out this proposal. (TravisReitter)

  • BOF about automatic bug reporting: plans to use airbag/minidump when no debug symbols are present. Debug-server plans. Support for non-linux-x86/linux-ppc platforms. (FernandoHerrera)

  • Communication and Collaboration - how we put these at the center of our desktop.. (RobTaylor)

Not Happening?

  • Design Thinking presentation/discussion by HavocPennington (JeffWaugh) (Havoc isn't here)

  • Nominating AlexGraveley for a session on Gimmie, and hopefully a BOF for the same (StuartHood) (Alex isn't here)

  • I'd like to give a presentation about GNOME interface stability and what we've learned all these years of ARC'ing GNOME at Sun (BrianCameron) (Jeff says "we don't do presentations, we do discussions")
