Steps for Admins for future GCI contests
Fill out Google application (see template for previous applications)
- Create/update GNOME wikipages if not existing already
- Collect potential tasks in GNOME wiki before GNOME becomes an accepted GCI organization according to the following template:
1. Title of the task: $Project: $TaskSummary 2. Description: * Steps: (e.g. as a list) * Benefits: * Requirements: (e.g. programming languages, Git - http://live.gnome.org/Git/Developers, etc) * Extra (optional): (e.g. additional work that could be done related to this) * Links: (any other helpful ressources that come to your mind) 3. Time to Complete: Deadline in hours (e.g. "96" if student has four days to deliver the result) 4. Mentor: Link ID's of mentors for this task, comma separated 5. Difficulty level: {Easy, Medium, Hard} 6. Task type(s): {Documentation, Outrach, User Interface, Research, Training, Code, Translation, Code} 7. Optional: Task tags: any custom tags you want to add
- After getting accepted follow instructions and provide potential further information that is required
Admins must check "Notifications" in Google Melange from time to time, as it is unclear when exactly notification mail (e.g. requests to become a mentor) is sent to your GMail account
Urge mentors from tasks in GNOME wiki to register an account in Google Melange and provide required information.
Email template from Nomveber 2011:
[You receive this email because you are listed as a mentor on https://live.gnome.org/GoogleCodeIn/Tasks ] Hej hej, thanks for volunteering to be a Google Code-In (GCI) mentor for GNOME! The contest starts on Monday (November 21, 08:00 UTC) and since today we are even able to create tasks in Google's Melange system. ;) ** WHAT YOU SHOULD TO DO NOW: ** 1) If you have not done yet, please go to http://www.google-melange.com/gci/profile/mentor/google/gci2011 to register yourself for GCI in general. 2) Afterwards, please tell me the email address or link_id that you used for registering so I can invite you to become a GCI mentor for GNOME (either reply to this email, or ping andre / andre_ on GIMPnet IRC). 3) After I have invited you as a mentor, check your mail again to finish the process. Note: I cannot see if you have registered or finished the process - better to send one email too much just to be on the safe side. I am going to take care of importing the tasks from our wikipage to Google Melange, but I can only set a mentor for a task if the mentor is already registered (see steps above). ** YOUR AVAILABILITY: ** Stuff happens, so if you will not be available for a while please try to find a co-mentor and add her/him to the task, or send an email to the admins (which are JohannesSchmid, DavidKing and AndreKlapper - see our pages on http://live.gnome.org for contact info). The GCI Terms of Service state that "The Mentor Organization agrees [...] To make available a person or persons to evaluate the incoming completed tasks, within 36 hours of submission, and to decide whether or not the task has been completed successfully". I don't take that too seriously, however I don't want trouble either. :) ** MOST IMPORTANT THING: ** Enjoy the contest and have a good time, and in case of questions please ask. Cheerio, andre
- Migrate (Bulk import) tasks from GNOME wikipage to Google Melange and set mentors according to their link IDs after they have successfully registered
- Enjoy!
- After GCI has finished, ask some students about blogging about it (KDE's nightrose did that)
Publish unfinished tasks (KDE's nightrose did that: http://blog.lydiapintscher.de/2012/01/20/we-have-some-code-in-tasks-left-over-for-you/ )
