Meeting on November 12

Agenda

  • SWAG for event in India (Nuritzi based on Anna's remark on Telegram) Shirley would be able to help with creating some of the swag. Umang has an event in the short term that we would need fliers and stickers. So it would be great to get materials for that event. Ideas for swag:
    • Hoodies
    • Stress balls
    • Beanies
    • beer glasses
    • apparel - socks
    • bags
    • computer sticker
    • asia - stickers, pin, bags, card stickers (stickers you put on cards), notebook - things that are easier to carrier, that gives the spirit of open source.
    • brochure
    • Swag should be easily transportable - conferences should have larger swag, while smaller events should stick with things that you can send easy distributed, - fliers, stickers, etc
  • New SWAG centers? (Nuritzi) Swag centers are localized areas that GNOME can easily ship swag for events. For small events, it should be easily distributable, like stickers and fliers. For larger events, we should plan ahead of time so we can send larger items like t-shirts, and what not. The new swag center can design new swag that is for localized content.

When designing new swag, we need to ask for permission to use the brand. Shirley said she would be happy to help lead this effort in creating swag for China. China is a large country, how many swag centers do we need? According to Shirley, we should be able to have one swag center as mail should be reliable enough to do that. Nuritzi will send assets to Shirley, so that she can research how to

* Bug Squash Month

Last year, we had a couple of days of actual bug squash, the way it worked, on those days people were on IRC answering questions, some teams organized meetups at that time. Not sure if we can repeat that. We need to talk with Alexandre in regards to what the schedule. November should be focused on this.

  • Patreon promotion (Nuritzi based on Anna's remark on Telegram) December is a holiday month, since it is a season of giving we can focus on promoting these patreon. Anna is unaware on how to promote using patreon. One idea is to have interviews with the people doing the patreon with the result posted on the engagement blog. We need to actually interview them prior to December. Looking for volunteers to for doing the interviews. The interview process is simply emailing them the questions and then getting the answers back.

Sri will put action items in the issues list and also post questions so that poeple can just ask.

The patreon issues list is available at http://gitab.gnome.org/GNOME/engagement/issues

pippin - https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/engagement/issues/2 baedert (timm bader) - https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/engagement/issues/3 swilmet - not yet created

action - want to send a email to foundation-list, we are planning on any other we want to promote. If you have another one please send another one. (create)

  • Social media operation (Anna)
  • Getting information
  • Build social network
  • How to create enthusiasm
  • how to get more engagement from the coders
  • Social media also a form of PR and branding

To achieve these goals - while twitter is a major platform, for other platform, like telegram, irc, facebook, group as it is more social especially for coders. So we can combine all of them together to do our branding. During my experience in GNOME Asia, we need to localize as much as possible, for many people in different country they cannot find the right way to get attached to GNOME. I have 2 methods to share:

  • 1) what do they need in these countries 2) use different languages to reach out Maybe initially use chinese, japanese, and english (and possibly, Hind and korean as well) 3) we need to add personality in our twitter. They are searching a sense of belonging. We need more photos and videos, and we need to post in the first person. the most popular twitter in the GNOME history is the one we shared pictures of the various release parties which were very popular that commented.

Reaction:

  • we want to advocate for not just coders, but for everyone, we need everyone.
  • we need to create a pipeline of content that we can send

=== Promoting the community's personal fundraising campaigns ===

  • There's a new patreon campaign around GTK https://www.patreon.com/baedert

  • We could definitely promote these things
  • We should align our promotions with their own promotions to create more momentum
  • Engagement blog might be a good place to have this showcased
  • We might want to send an email to the Engagement list / Foundation list and tell them we are open to promoting patreon campaigns in this way. Do this only after a few tries and after we see how it goes.
  • Does this conflict with the "Adopt a Hacker" program we have on Friends of GNOME? We should make sure we still promote our own programs
  • ACTION: @Nuritzi Reach out to the new person and see if they want to be featured on the Engagement team blog. See if the other 2 we know about also want this
  • ACTION: @Nuritzi to see if Cassandra & Adelia can write the blog posts

  • Party Packs. Links to party pack ideas:
  • Photo wall / video wall at the venue: goo.gl/0Q80Pt
    • The venue has a huge video wall that we could put videos on. Maybe Bastian wants to do something for that? ;) Maybe this could be screenshots of older versions of GNOME

    • Bastian is in touch with someone from an old GUADEC and that person has a bunch of old footage. Bastian has plans for some video material.
    • Another idea would be to have an animated clip or something
    • ACTION: @Bastian will plan on making a video to play on loop for the Birthday party
    • UPDATE: June 9, 2017
      • Check to see if Bastian has helped to make a video for the video wall

      • Update August 24, 2017: The 20th Birthday Party at GUADEC went well!

SWAG Centers & Events

* Distribution centers around the world for swag requests to be sent out locally * Want to recruit people to run distribution centers (foundation members vs. anywho who communicates with the engagement team and shows commitment) * Include something like: If you're not a foundation member and still want to run a distribution center, reach out to the engagement team for help and support * Identify events near the distrbution center that will be targeted * ACTION: Reach out to GNOME Asia, GNOME Peru, etc. to start recruiting distributors, reach out to members in India * About 3 months prior to these events we should reach out to people and see if they can man the booth, make sure people are attending and have a plan * ACTION: Nuritzi to send an email to engagement-list and foundaiton-list to see if people have others that they target * ACTION: Biraj to add FOSS Asia to the 2018 list * UPDATE: Aug 24, 2017: There are two successful SWAG centers so far and we'll think about adding more later, once we figure out local groups a bit better

STALLED PROJECTS

Recipe hackathon all over the world

  • Could be great to do worldwide
  • Could we make this a competition? Most popular recipe as voted by Allan. :)

  • ACTION: Biraj start to think about how this would work. Biraj to go through the process of submitting one recipe successfully and then thinking about how we scale it. === Newcomers to Engagement Initiative ===
    • Questions on newcomer's channel is now more about code vs how to build things
    • We have 3 or 4 new Polari contributors and that's really significant since we haven't
    • Carlos has been busy fixing a lot of bugs and making sure that it works on distributions. They're working on making more apps avaiable through the newomer's initiative
    • We shuold check in with Carlos and see if there's anything else that has been added for publicity purposes to help make sure we keep momentum
    • We might want to have some shout outs from maintainers / mentors from projects that want newcomers to join their projects
    • We might want to circle back feedback from newcomers about what their experience has been so far
    • How can we be more data driven? We can see how many new authors there are committing code. Emmanuele is doing git stats on GTK. We may need to read how many new contributors in this release.
    • Newcomer app teams. Maybe we can showcase some of the new work being done.
    • ACTION: @Nuritzi to check in with Carlos about any new developments.
    • ACTION: @Basitian to check in with newcomer app teams to see if they want to do a shout out or else showcase some of the new work being done in their projects.

=== Google ads (Rosanna)===

  • Found their website (google.com/grants)
  • We'd need to write a blurb and maintain keywords for them
  • Would need pruning/maintenance every quarter or so
  • Sri was going to check in with Justin to see if he has interest in handling this (email sent asking)

Promote Engagement meetings

  • Perhaps intimidating for newcomers?
  • Public meeting once a month?
  • Hangouts on air
  • Need a list of things people can do
  • Recruit people!
    • Target designers etc?
    • Possibly make better use of the engagement blog (TIL: there's an engagement blog)

Promote Friends of GNOME

  • Neil to check with Tobi if we just get a list of email addresses or need to use a system === Create Official Groups ===
  • submit an application, having established trust (foundation member takes a look)
  • list the official groups on a wiki or something (think about adding a section to the gnome.org website to create more visibility around local groups)
    • They should:

* have at least one event a year * gnome release parties strongly encouraged * take part in social media-stuff (hashtags when their events are happening)
