GNOME Marketing Meeting Minutes
January 14th, 2010
GNOME Store
Andreas Nilsson has been working on getting the GNOME Store ready for launch and sent an email with remaining tasks at http://mail.gnome.org/archives/marketing-list/2010-January/msg00046.html
- Stormy replied via email with product suggestions
- Need to fix a minor CSS issue with spacing in the left sidebar (see the “Promote” link)
- Need to add a header to the page - Paul to add the header to the GNOME art request page on live.gnome.org
Friends of GNOME
- Sysadmin Campaign
- Need a volunteer to update the GNOME.org pages with the donation ruler and copy
- Paul to email the marketing list with a request for a volunteer and the action items
- Growing donations
- Referrals - how do we give someone credit or travel sponsorship to the person who refers the most new subscribers?
- LWN membership
- Look into a dual partnership with the Linux Foundation
- Look into possible partnership with Linux Pro Magazine
- Marketing team is looking for a volunteer to help manage Friends of GNOME and investigate some of these ideas
- Zonker to reach out to the Linux Foundation about possible partnership ideas
- Jason Clinton looking at building a mockup of a new dialog in the About dialog of GNOME apps via a patch to GTK that could pull a donor list directly into the tarball
- Jason to build a mockup, dicuss with the Release Team and then propose to a wider group
- Stormy to email the marketing list to keep brainstorming ideas about Friends of GNOME going (and we’re all going to reply and share our feedback!)
GNOME Marketing Hackfest
- Discussed next steps / outstanding action items from the hacfkest, inclucing:
- Paul to work with Stormy and get all content (slides, presentations, conference FAQs, brochures) added to the wiki
- Jason to help with working on the GNOME 3.0 and Shell slides
- Once all the content is posted, Paul to email the list with outstanding action items and assign dates as a goal to finish
- Vinicius finished the slides template (Guy to review)
GNOME 3.0 Videos
- Marketing team wants to create a series of short videos to introduce users to GNOME 3.0
- Paul to follow up with hackfest members on the GNOME 3.0 campaign theme and then email the list
- Need to start developing the video idea for a possible hackfest in April to film and edit
- valessio offered to help with video product and has experience with Synfix Animation 2D, Inkscape, Gimp and Kdenlive
Women’s Outreach Program
- Marina gave an overview of the program
- Peter Brown of the FSF blogged about the program in the hope of bringing in some donations to help with the program, but no donations were received
- Discussed possible ways to get donations, including Google Adwords, changing FoG to earmark donations (which would need attorney feedback), polls and using a dedicated page for Women’s Outreach Program for donations (which is the recommendation moving forward)
GNOME 3.0 Launch Party
- bharatkapoor proposed an idea for the GNOME 3.0 launch of having a GNOME 3.0 launch party held at multiple locations worldwide that streamed video of GNOME developers giving talks and demos of GNOME 3 from one location
Proposal here: http://live.gnome.org/Gnome%203%20Release%20Splash
- Shane Fagan to follow up with downstream community managers on launch party best practices
- Proposal needs to be discussed more and needs feedback (brainstorming ideas included should we time with the Boston Summit which is 2 weeks after GNOME 3.0 launch, impact on press coverage if we delay the launch party, venue, locations and more)
Misc.
- Stormy needs help with creating Google Adwords now that we have a non-profit grant from Google
- Team liked the idea of monthly meetings to start
- Paul to send out the Doodle link (with correct timezone information) Jan 20th for the February meeting
