Managing classic experience expectations
- The aim is not to re-create GNOME 2, but an experience is somewhat familiar to GNOME 3.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=685744 (Still work in progress)
- Using classic mode might cause confusion as we are not completely recreating GNOME 2. We should rename to something that would minimize confusion. Also communicate that this is an experimental release.
- We need live-cd's for FOSDEM and Linuxfest Ohio to show Classic Mode and other features in GNOME 3.8
- We should discuss this on the list (Hard to manage expectations without knowing what it looks like right now)
Matthias Claesen from the release team joined the call and gave us a brief background on the classic mode. The list of extensions is currently:
- Minimize/Maximize buttons
- Nautilus draws icons on the desktop
- Alt-Tab
- Task bar (up in the air on final design)
- Static workspaces
- Application menu (based on the axe menu extension)
Also:
- Debiarsh, Florian and Giovanni have been working on it.
- gnome-shell-extensions module is where the work is happening
- Once it's done, it will allow you to log in to a classic mode session in GDM
- Relatively conservative
- Matthias can create a screencast for us and blog post sometime next week.
3.8 marketing message and cycle materials
We have a bunch of conferences coming up. What will we be talking about?
Release topics:
- Stress Privacy Settings in System Settings and tie that into our privacy campaign.
- Applications have been getting more work, not only the Shell.
Community topics:
- Womens Outreach have expanded to other projects. - possible messaging for conferences and release notes
- Every detail matters - polish by new contributors.
- How many new contributors do we have?
- ACTION: Andreas to check with Alberto if Healtcheck can be done for all modules.
- Keyboard shortcut table for print for FOSDEM
- ACTION Andreas to look into creating materials for FOSDEM
- Community effort to collect keyboard data as GNOME Goal
- ACTION: Emily to post on the Forums
Release notes is where we get attention, so bringing up OPW would be appropriate.
