Misc. Notes:
need a superhero named footman- mascot- maybe st. george, slaying the dragon
- Tux Magazine is going to become aggressively pro-KDE
should we be more aggressive in our counter-KDE comparisons? Could we do a KDE mythbuster? like, what are the myths about gnome? Answer: probably not
- t-shirts, mousepads, etc.- how do we increase committment? someone who has bought a t-shirt, or made a CVS commit, has more commitment to the project and is more like to become an Evangelist User.
- we have a hostile (or reputation as hostile) community for lists, bugsquad, etc.- how do we fix that without screwing up our development model?
- question: what about youth market? what is happening to the youth in spain who have to use it in school? are they using it at home?
Evangelist Users:
- Mozilla does a good job of this
- jeff: 'hemorrhaging users' because we haven't reached out to the early adopters, etc.- not leveraging community to do our marketing for us.
- mozilla used to have an active HTML correctness evangelism team, do we need a 'media correctness team' to go out to bad articles/media and show them how gret gnome is/ or research why they didn't like it?
- we fail to counter FUD spread in places, the way some other groups do
need to hype our user forums more? how did UbuntuCom get such great, friendly forum?
- how do we make gnome 1337 without compromising our 'core values'? (flip side: os/x is not particularly 1337, or not compromised, but obviously it gets evangelized- partially because of the depth/flexibility- easy for newbies, powerful for experts)
- alternately: how do we make gnome more fun? maybe better question than making ourselves more 1337?
- get a superstar? we as developers need to be more public, more unabashed about our endorsements- havoc, miguel? what about kernel people? others?
Marketing Slogans: (total brainstorm)
- 'The Desktop of Choice'
- 'The Choice Desktop'
- 'Desktop Linux Defined'
- 'The GNOME's Have It'
- 'the Space Desktop' (insert falling away voice here)
- 'Gimme GNOME'
- 'Got GNOME?' [white lip on Jeff][Need the olsen twins to endorse]
- 'Got Foot?'
- 'Computing made easy' (for historical completeness)
- 'wake up and smell the (penguin|foot)'
- 'let the gnome work for you' (play of just works)
- 'develop a new kind of foot fetish'
- 'give windows the (foot|boot)'
- 'step through the next window'
- 'our windows wobble, yours (break|fall over)'
- 'gnome is your free workspace'
- 'getting work done'
- 'something vulgar about a foot up a backside'
- 'simply feet'- something to do with simplicity? 'because life is complicated enough'
- 'gnome sweet gnome'
- 'gnome is where the heart is'
refer to it as footwear instead of software?
Need to translate well, ideally- can we make it one word in german?
have a competition? buttons?
