Summer of Code & Outreach Program for Women Report

Draft

With its participation in Google Summer of Code (GSoC) & the organization of the Outreach Program for Women, GNOME continues to offer individuals a great opportunity to get involved with free software.

In 2013 the two programs attracted a large number of new contributors to GNOME, in a wide variety areas including programming design, documentation and marketing.

The Outreach Program for Women (OPW), which has been organized by the GNOME Foundation since 2010 pairs interns with mentors from a number of Free Software projects. In 2013 the program was highly successful and grew to include 62 interns, organizations and companies including: GNOME Foundation, Google, Intel, Linux Foundation, Mozilla, Fedora, JBoss, Perl, OpenStack Foundation, Free Software Foundation, MediaGoblin, Red Hat, Wikimedia Foundation, WordPress, Yocto Project, OpenMRS, Subversion, and Tor.

31 students contributed to GNOME through GSoC 2013.

More details about participants and projects are available in the GNOME Outreach Program Yearbook 2013 which was published by the GNOME foundation.

[footnote] Marina Zhurakhinskaya, a GNOME Board and foundation member coordinated OPW during 2013. The foundation is very optimistic about the the future of both programs.
