Screenshots for documentation

Traditionally, the Documentation Team use a screenshot of the main window in introduction.page. Apart from that, the team tries to keep screenshots to a minimum because they can be difficult to translate as they need to be recreated accurately by the translators.

Maximised applications

Some applications, such as gnome-photos and gnome-documents start up in a maximised mode.

1. Create a new account called "Rupert Monkey".
2. Make sure that the account is using the Adwaita theme and does not have any customisations.
3. Change your screen size to 800×600 pixels in the Settings panel.
4. Open the application, preferably without any customised content unless you must have something to demonstrate it.
5. Take the screenshot of the whole desktop, making sure that the mouse pointer is not included.

Other applications

1. Make sure that you are using the Adwaita theme and do not have any customisations.
2. Open the application, preferably without any customised content unless you must have something to demonstrate it.
3. Resize the window to under 800×600 pixels. (If you have trouble deciding what size your main window is, change your screen size to 800×600 pixels in the the Settings panel before taking the screenshot because your application is guaranteed to be smaller that way.)
4. Take the screenshot only of the current window and do not include the pointer. You can set these settings in the Screenshot application or use the correct keyboard shortcut.

Naming the screenshots

Use <description>-<version-number>.png naming scheme for the screenshot. For example, "epiphany-3-8.png" for a screenshot of the Epiphany main window in version 3.8 or "pref-3-8.png" for a screenshot of the preference dialog.
