Design proposal for the Files app and GtkPlacesSidebar.
Goals
- Clean up and simplify the places sidebar, so it doesn't contain so many locations by default.
- Provide a single way to view "other places" outside of ~/.
Discussion
Tentative Design
- Internal volumes are not shown in the sidebar by default. Instead, they can be browsed through the other locations list and bookmarked.
- Connect to server is integrated as an action bar. Recent servers can be accessed through the drop down, and are also autocompleted.
- View options are insensitive, partly due to implementation constraints - it is difficult to provide both an icon and a list view.
