- Fix some of the issues with gtkfilechooser (i.e. not following Nautilus' single/double click setting, not being able to do some basic file manipulation e.g. renaming a newly created folder because of a typo when doing Save As, being able to deselect a a folder when doing a Save As so that when you click save it doesn't open the folder that is selected that you can't deselect)

Theme packages should be able to contain panel background image and apply it to the panel when activated.

If possible make it so that gnome-games can be installed separately as some only like some of them.

Make it so Evolution is uninstallable, I have 3 mailing services, all of which are online and after trying gmail with evolution made it clear that for my type of usage it wasn't important feature to have a mail client.

1. Many "_Browse..." applications (applications that start when you're looking for a file to upload e.g.) are very incomplete and seem to vary greatly between programs. If you are uploading an image it often does not include a small thumbnail, so you can see the image in more detail. You can also not create a new folder in browsing windows, so you have to open Nautilus, find your way to the working directory and make a new folder that way (because you often need a new folder when you're downloading something, say if you're downloading a picture of a new friend and you need a folder called "Pictures of Casey")

2. The GNOME panel is monochrome and it's hard to make it look good.

3. Not all icons grow big when you increase the size of the panel. Icons like the users in the 'User switcher' are embiggened but the shut down button isn't. Every launcher icon gets bigger while the icons in the notification area don't. The main menu icon grows bigger while the weather icon doesn't etc. It's highly inconsistent.

4. The icons on the GNOME panel are always coloured differently, this is of course the 'fault' of those that made the icons for said programs but when the panel has the main menu, the weather, the window list, the notification icons and the user switcher applets... all differently coloured it does not look good. I can't think of a way of solving that extemporaneously but please consider a way to make it more uniform. I'm not talking about making all the icons blue, or red, but rather making them fit better together. The KTorrent icon e.g. sticks out like a sore thumb.

5. A very small improvement; I use the "Character Palette" to store Icelandic quotation marks (both double: „...“ and single: ,...‘). I never use just one, and I want to be able to group them together. That is to say, I want the character palette to copy both quotes („“) when it click them instead of just one. That way I don't have to click the first one („), select the program and pasting, then click the other one (“) and selecting the program again and pasting it.

Properly integrating people as first class objects, let me set GMail as my prefered email "program" and generally deal better with web applications. Better and deeper integrating index searching such as Beagle (one example would be using it to manage my media library). Make .NET a first class citizen in GNOME on equal terms. I would like to see exciting experiments such as using Moonlight extensively to do GUI work in GNOME.

Task oriented interface rather than application focused.

Rethink the whole applet mess. So much crack is going on and surely a saner solution could be thoughtout.

Integrate and embrace PackageKit to do exciting little helpful things like installing lacking dependencies to support on demand (e.g. 7zip when opening a file and it is not present).

Embrace a media library solution into the desktop, we need something to handle different types of media. Syncs up with external devices and displays a nice interface to interact with this library - Banshee is excellent in this area.

The "IM" solution should definitely include Webcam/VoIP support for MSN, it is a vital lacking part of the desktop that keeps many people from embracing GNOME.

Design a task oriented minimal GNOME'ish shell for Netbook and Nettops to fill the niche with the solid GNOME stack and give standardize experience for device makers to offer. This should be designed with the goals and intended tasks of a netbook in mind rather than a "small laptop". Looking at something like the EeePC's Linux interface would be a good start.

I would like to see GTK get modernized. I think it has gotten behind QT in terms of exploring the capabilities of the modern computer/gpu.

.

IMPORTANT:
Epiphany should be more functional.
Setting up accounts in Evolution should be simpler.
Something like Gnome Do should be integrated.
There should be a native instant messaging application with webcam, voice and popular protocol support.
EXTRA:
Menus should be designed better.
The calculator should be able to solve algebraic problems and draw simple graphs.
There should be a GUI configuration utility for commonly edited configuration files (ex. /etc/fstab. /boot/grub/menu.lst, etc).

2 perfectly designed ways to operate the system. One for keyboarded computers/laptops. the other one for touchscreen devices. Integrate live search at many places, the best thing I could imagine is type as you search component for searching in menu items of running application, so I don't have to lookup my desired command in menu if I know it's name.

Integrate well many things, evolve gconf, more use of dbus in applications. Could be interested to extend GtkMenu to automatically provide list of it's items through dbus, and method to execute them. This way could for example Gnome Do handle searching and executing of them. I hate application menu because I have to visually search for command I want.

It needs to have a number of highly logical and unique animations which accompany major elements of the user interface. Major UI aspects should be mutually exclusive (as opposed to the OSX Dock, which lumps many functions together), non-repetitive (like how Windows displays the same information in 3 different ways, or supports multiple overlapping ways of doing simple tasks), and geared towards maximizing scalability regardless if using a single small screen, or multiple cinematic screens.Anonymous

Too many dialogs confirming things that are working. Sign onto your wifi LAN, for example, and it presents a notice letting you know it worked. Of course it worked; I only want to know when it doesn't, otherwise it seems reasonable to expect that it just does what I tell it.

With all due respect, there's only one OS which gives more frequent unnecessary user feedback: Windows ("You just mounted a removable volume", "You are now connected to the Internet", "Updates installed successfully", etc.)

Look fresher, the panels always look incredibly plain.
More use of nautilus, less use of individual applications ... eg ability to queue playlists of OGV and OGG in nautilus rather than in rhythmbox and totem.

Library directories which know they are designed for a specific task, eg photo folders, music folders, movie folders... The ability to have movies have tags just like id3 in mp3s.

An album directory should become a metaphor for the physical object, the icon become a CD or DVD cover, clicking on it giving a KDE 4.2 like widget that offers the ability to open it or play it, tangible, tactile ability to zoom and rotate the cover and read the contents on the back... The ability to read reviews from the internet and fetch lyrics from with in nautilus would make GNOME feel great! No other DE seems to offer this at the moment.

F-spot needs to improve a lot. It's a really nice program but just needs so much more polish.

Lately F-spot opens when I plug in a digital camera... it doesn't really work nicely... the old way seemed easier and more intuitive even though F-spot is exactly where I usually want those photos to go.

GNOME should be something I show off to friends not just tell them I use it because it works well.

- Redo GTK or ditch it. It's terribly slow, or appears to be when it redraws. Any Qt-based application looks so much faster and more responsive. GTK is one of the main reasons why GNU/Linux GUIs look much more sluggish and slower than Windows, and this is hurting GNU/Linux as a desktop operating system.

- Please add more customization; don't hide or remove advanced features; don't insult my intelligence. Keep in mind if you design a desktop for idiots, only idiots will use it. I'd like everything to be customizable, everything to have an option to display as much information of anything as possible (down to raw hardware information if possible), almost everything to offer a command-line or command-based interface equivalent clearly, and nothing hidden at all. The first time I used GNOME I had a hard time finding how to merely run a process by name - this is sad, as even the toy operating system Windows has a prominent place for this feature (Start+Run). And no, launching processes is not an advanced hacker feature.

- No automatically applied settings: this is ridiculous and dangerous. I hate that. One "Apply" button is not going to make it a desktop for neckbearded hackers.

- Don't worry about transparency, animation, and other useless stuff. I want to get real work done; I worry for what's inside windows, not what's outside them. I don't want to waste system resources and time waiting for windows to perform some cute dance on my desktop; I need to get my job done.

Well, I think that making it run just a little lighter than the 2.x series is right now, but that could be a difficult task as obviously adding more stuff, makes it run heavier, but then again, who doesn't like a good challenge?

Although it does not usually affect me personally as my Computer handles gnome perfectly.

But, sometimes on other machines I've put it on, it tends to slow them down.

Another thing you could do is, make some of the programs integrated, such as empathy, support more functions, file transfer would be nice.

But, when I own a computer, use run an OS & DE, the main thing I look for is: Customizability. I want to be able to change every single aspect of it, and put it how I like it, I currently do this. But sometimes I do find limits.

Most people will probably be saying "make it look like vista" filling out this survay. Which is fine, but I'm not most people, I want a nice, clean, and light desktop :) Unlike KDE.

Now, as for "main menu" which you can get on Gnome 2.x (you know, the one were it's just one button, and it pops up in a straight line?) I think you should leave that, however, at the same time make it changable. meaning, if someone wanted to make it look like vista's start menu, they only have to do a few clicks and it's done.

Basically like a start menu manager, you could click it, like the edit menu's is now, except it could be much more powerful. And allow you to change it, apply themes etc. The start menu can already be customized. but there is no easy way to do so without first having some sort of knowledge of Linux.

Clearly for me this isn't a problem, and for me, it would benefit me, but in one way: Quickness.

Also, bring back GDM's customizability.. I miss it :-(

Top panel is an essentiel part. Bottom panel not so much. Maybe a dock like Gnome-Do, but can be presented as an option for those need a dock. Show the running apps by icon in the top panel, not wide like a taskbar but only with a icon (like deskbar, gnome-look.org). I like the activity concept (with the workspace view), but make sure that there is a 2D and a 3D option for that in relation to powersavings, GPU.
I must admit that my personal wish for a future desktop environment is very much like this mockup found here: http://www.gnome-look.org/content/show.php/May-B?content=45837.
Simpel and clean with two small docks, very task/activity oriented but very effective in my opinion. In my mind this is what many people like there desktop to look like, especially on a netbook type device.

* Clean sound interface. OSS vs. ALSA vs. Pulse Audio is really messy. Pick one and get the environment working with it nicely.

* Ensure applications, specially applets, survive suspend and hibernate cycles. For example, the volume applet (2.24.1) goes bananas (100% CPU utilization) every time the system comes back from hibernation.

* Ensure a simple IM application with full VoIP and Video conference support is available. So make Empathy work well, or get Pidgin functionality integrated into Ekiga, or get Pidgin to do VoIP/Video, or whatever. The fact is, IM/VoIP/Video should be straight forward to use via an integrated application.

Nautilus is extremely, extremely slow when opening folders with large numbers of files. I have turned off image and multimedia previews for all files, however I have many folders with several thousands of files in them and it can take 5+ minutes to view the folder. I had for a while switched to PCManFM which was much better and faster, but Nautilus kept reinstalling itself so I finally in frusturation went back to nautilus.

I don't use panels much and the ones I do have I use the little slider buttons to hide them horizontally. I wish this was more feature-full: I wish autohide could work horizontally, I wish you didn't have to have buttons on both sides if I only want to hide it on one side of the screen. I use several non-extended panels at the bottom corners of the screen (one for notification area and one for the menu) but they stay hidden most of the time, and they don't interact well with each other. If I were to put them side by side, and the notification area panel grew a bit with a new icon, the second panel rather than sliding sideways jumps up over the original panel. Also, to move them directly side by side is a challenge as they're not sticky; it seems as if I must carefully scoot the panel closer and closer to get to the edge.

I would like to see improvements in the way we handle files and lauch applications. The way gnome-do does things is a good example, tought I would like to have a more integrated application than that. Window management needs improvements too, I would like to just drag a window and make it go to a diferent workspace, a bit like with compiz. Just an axample tought.
I really really would like to see a e-maill client less clutterd then evolution. I like evolution but, most of the times it's too much for so little things people. I know that's very hard, but one can dream :). Something like a stripped down evolution would be great!

GNOME should change the desktop development approach, I know GNOME is very good in usability and accessibility, but GNOME haven't *changed* for almost 3 years. I love the simplicity of GNOME, but every new release of GNOME, I see nothing *new* (from an ordinary user's perspective).Tinh Xuan Truong

I think that there should be a way to create custom views of files in Nautilus, something like evolution virtual folders, but based on metadata inserted in the files. For example, using EXIF data one could sort pictures taken in a given time interval (I'd rather have this done by the file manager than f-spot because EXIF data are easily portable, and Nautilus is running always); or OO.org metadata or mp3/ogg tags. If you don´t integrate each and every eye-candy or usability plugin for compiz-fusion and make them equally, or more, stable, then don´t break compiz-fusion support with the new panel. If if it becomes impossible to have all these awesome desktop effects, I will switch to KDE.

Howard's shell concept is a good place to start.
GNOME should pay attention to some of the upcoming work from vendors like Intel around UI (June timeframe?).
I know I am probably the only one but I still totally use beagle at least 50 times per day. It works almost flawlessly for me. Search should be integral.
Netbooks and touch panel have terrible pointing-devices, finding a way to make keyboard based navigation more discoverable would be great (the likes of gnome-do but discoverable).
Find ways to attract new users, add more games (cool ones)? Introduce target segment features (parental control), deal with device synchronization much better smartphones (contacts, tasks, notes, sms, calendars, ...), upnp devices (xbox360, ps3, ...) and more.
Create a synchronization for our users between their mothership (main desktop or notebook) and their other devices INCLUDING the netbook. Treat GNOME 3 on the netbook as an extension of the main OS and apps on the mothership.
Keep metadata in sync, keep data collection in sync (with storage capacity in mind), behavioral based data synchronization (most recent used, most viewed, most rated, ...)
GNOME needs a new logo! That's should come as part of the GNOME 3 themes. Modernize the image and broaden the reach.

I think that Gnome's UI is pretty well done and the software that run on the environment have good support too. In general, I'd like to see some refinements on its UI and a stronger politic on how to release stable programs for running on it.
The rumors about the new filesystem navigation method sounds good too. Although I feel confortable with the actual way of organization and searching for files, I guess that it would be better to convince newbies to use Linux or another SO that runs Gnome.
Another interesting point is that it would be nice to see more native graphical tools written by the Gnome Development Team to administer, for instance, a Linux machine, letting the complex operations actually done at the Terminal for advanced users.

More overall polish and visual refinement. Addition of more modern features. I like the gnome "simple by default" philosophy, but there are certain things that would be nice if they were configurable, or had their configuration exposed somewhere other than Gconf. I feel like Gnome is quite a solid base which does everything I _need_ it to, but it doesn't necessarily cater perfectly to my _wants_. Of course all the things I can think of _now_ are fluff. Desktop widgets, integrate Gnome Do. Stuff that OSX has, timed desktop background rotation with elegant fades between images. Creature comforts. Integration. Window manager stuff. A way to quickly and easily tile windows. have windows appear only on the screen / workspace they were created in? I'm really reaching here, gnome really suits me pretty darn well...Quentin Hartman

The loss in configurability in recent releases has been very painful, please restore full control. System configuration tools which are part of a gnome desktop (can't tell if they've considered part of gnome itself) are absolutely dismal, NetworkManager/SystemConfigNetwork is the worst and should just be shot in the head, but other obvious tasks are either duplicated and/or done really poorly, like setting up lvms, host files, hostnames, etc. Evolution is a disaster beyond redemption, far worse than the junk it emulates, Outlook, a proper mail client would be nice, or rather "Unified Messaging Client". There seems to be no tool that handles all IM tasks well, for example empathy and pidgin don't do IRC sanely. I think the best improvement will be integrate search engines with other programs, like video and audio players, photo managers.

For example, I use beagle/tracker to find files in my computer and to do it, these programs need to index all data I have (at least in my home folder). But fspot, gthumb, totem, rhythmbox and other programs don't know any search engine.

If I want to open a file in these programs I need to find them through nautilus and, some times, like fspot, rhythmbox and others, I need to build *another* index. (Fspot is the worse, once it likes to *copy* all your pics to its own directory if you don't pay attention to a little option)

Provide a standard of notifications similar to ubuntu Jaunty Jackalope's notifications, but have easy accessible options to do what you want with them instead of a static implementation.

Provide the calendar/ time applet in gnome-panel to be configured with other mail programs like Thunderbird/ Claws or Sunbird. So people have options to do what they want to do and keep track of instead of just using evolution and having it work with *just* the gnome suite.

More customization of how the date and time is viewed

Have more options with nm-applet, similar to wicd. Percentages, type of encryption, hardware ID, meter. (The icon is great, but also have an option to NOT have the icon appear and still connection to the default network(s)

No bulky menus or panels(like kde4.x.x). We've successfully entered into the
netbook phase a year or two ago. Having bulky panels, and menus wouldn't be nice. Even with a laptop with limited screen real estate.

Having the option to totally and successfully edit the menu options. Adding more root menus, or creating your own - being able to divide everything up if needed.

Having Deluge as the default Torrent application instead of Transmission. And, not using any mono apps as default applications since the framework depends on a lot dependencies. Unless there's a way to cut them down.
Having Empathy as the default messaging client.

What I've seen in Ubuntu lately with the transitions between distros is the different names of the same options in the menus. Sessions became Statup Applications. I don't like it, that change messes everything up with a lot of people. It did for me anyway. Not seeing sessions in the menu made me search for the menu option, it wasn't nice at all.

Nautilus - Having more customization in the UI. Similar to how the Firefox lets their users configure the UI in that program. If I had the choice, or if I knew how to configure Nautilus to be a lot more minimal I would do it. Smaller icons, names, or no names per icon, the ability to change the bar locations, and being able to add icons next to whatever bar. For example, putting the home icon beside the location bar. Removing icons if possible. When in browser mode, having the option to have favourite directories in a menu at the bottom left.

That's all i can think of right now. I'm sure I'll be able to think of a lot more in the future.

I here is my suggestion for the future gnome 3.0. I not totally knew to this discussion because I have already tried the gnome shell.

Maybe the gnome shell is a good idea, especially the concept of "activities". It would be great if my computer can understand what I am actually doing (in therm of activities and not just opening firefox) and display my data in relation with the activity I am doing at the moment.
For example in the list of frequent used application (the 5 displayed when you clic on activities) I would like the applications be a mix of the most frequent used and the most frequent used in this situation. I mean when I am doing python, my sql browser should be in this list whereas when I am checking my mails it shouldn't.

An other interesting point would be to have applets like in kde4 (plasmoid) that could be displayed in a dock and/or on the desktop. Those applet shouldn't be considered as windows when the button 'activities' is clicked.

Finally I haven't tried the new application for browsing your hard drive but it looks great. Nevertheless I think that the files related to the system or the software configuration should be displayed like in nautilus too because of their structure that is important for the software.

That's for my view. I trust in gnome and I'm sure 3.0 will be a great step in the future.

Reduce unnecessary window management options. What if the task list allowed multiple windows to be selected (like a set of tick boxes), with the selected ones tiling to fill the work area? Then, each workspace could show a different (possibly overlapping) set of windows.

Merge the title-bar with the top panel (or the menu-bar)—there's too much wasted empty space.

Replace in-application menus with something better—some users are overwhelmed by them or simply never explore them. For example, toolbar icons for commands that the user has used frequently, and a command line (like Gnome-Do, Firefox's awesome-bar or Firefox with Ubiquity) for everything else.

Search was improved really well. Gnome-do is a great native application also but I would love to see a better organization of the menu icons, a better description of what they do, I find it hard to remember where or how i configured specific options sus as GDM screens or keyboard shortcuts.

Audio configuring is for me one of the hardest task to do, there are at least 2 possible ways to do it (from the taskbar and from the audio menu), sometimes this is really confusing.

The screensavers are a nice thing to see when my computer is idle, configuring the screensaver has not many options, for example the picture folder screensaver is set to a specific path that cannot be easily changed.

First and foremost, Gnome should stay out of the way of the application that has focus, (most of the time being the web browser, I imagine). Realize that the world is moving to SaaS, so perhaps embrace technology such as Mozilla Prism, Mozilla Weave. Why doesn't Gnome provide any SaaS? Synchronize multiple Gnome profiles, Micro Applications like Firefox Add-Ons could be hosted and installed on demand. I have also always felt like many full applications can be installed on demand, an example is Evolution, I use Gmail, and don't use evolution ever. also the Palm pilot program, I never use it, why can't it be installed on demand? Furthermore, I think work needs to be done to improve taskbars when they are left and right, instead of top and bottom. This will help a ton when using gnome on netbooks for example.Christian Page

Support Input Method better so that I can enter either Chinese or English in any GTK application instantly, instead of switching IM several times to get the IM I want, or switch to other applications first then switch back to let IM panel show correctly. The input method problem is quite annoying! No matter in Windows or Linux I am bothered by this.Yuan Yijun

The biggest problem of Gnome 2.x for me is that it starts too *slow*. I have to wait some ten seconds before the wallpaper shows and panel gets ready. Now I prefer Xfce4 and wmii3, just because they are faster.

Native support for dockable window controls would be nice. Also, stabilizing the API to the level that makes commercial ISV's feel confident of using it & adopting it would help. IOW, promote use of GTK to commercial vendors more so that they don't have to choose between QT and GTK. Nothing wrong with QT technologically, but I don't think having two dominant toolkits is helping ISV's develop Linux apps. I'd like just one to emerge as the dominant toolkit, and I want GTK to be it for licensing reasons. QT may be more advanced, but I don't think one has to pay to use GUI toolkit to develop an application.

This may seem nothing to do with Gnome, but having the commercial apps look native in Gnome would boost desktop experience a lot. IOW, Gnome, as it stands today, is already pretty good for me.

1. Have Expose built into metacity compositing. Also create other effects like minimize, maximize, . . ., kde already has a bunch of that.
2. Implement Global Menu as an option.
3. Allow application-wise keyboard shortcut handlling, of course, the more shortcuts the better.
4. Get Meta/Win/Command key to work with/without combos as keyboard shortcut.
5. Have application/place menu built into nautilus (right-click), like the ones in fluxbox and xfce, etc.
6. Implement a native keystroke launcher like Google Desktop/ Gnome Do/ . . . --- it would be nice to integrate the launcher with a dock if global menu is in use.
7. Add more default options in the nautilus right-click menu, especially when right-clicking desktop, like the ones in OpenSolaris 2008.11
8. Implement middle-click (or scrolling) on the desktop to switch between windows/workspaces
9. Implement a separate left click on empty desktop if not cropping (drag-and-drop) that would bring up a special section of the nautilus right-click menu, say, applications/places (this would work better if the application/place menu is moved here)
10. Enable users to combine multiple windows into one, that is, one window with several tabs to switch to those individualized former "windows".
11. Use icons extensively, in order to replace window title.
12. When not having global menu, have the file menu replace the window title bar (we could have icons instead of windows). If an icon is not available, switch to old mode, and do not display any icon in the window titile bar, nor do window list.
13. Native support for latex/mathml for document processing (fonts, but not images) desktop-wide.
14. Rewrite Tomboy Notes (GNote), as the default note taking application. Allow table and picture insertion, and native mathml/latex support.
15. Fix epiphany extensions and add features like proxy profile, also improve mouse gestures and site permissions.
16. Modularize GConf, or alternatives, without having to maintain a single large %gconf-tree.xml . Have a base xml and several organized schemas would do. No need to emulate windoze registry.
17. Have applications able to use opentype fonts system-wide, no exceptions like openoffice.org .
18. Have evince work with multiple formats, like text files, odf, . . . like Mac OS X Preview, and have evince work properly with Acrobat 3D, forms, and other dynamic content in Adobe Reader. Also build a global document format conversion service that allow instant conversion of files, say odf to pdf, without having to rely on application. Some command-line utilities is also preferred. (Dont have to launch the monstrous openoffice.org everytime)
19. Global spell-checking, syntax checking . . .
20. Allow complex toolbars with tabs.
21. Make gnome more modular. Just dont rely on GDM to load up certain plugins for the desktop to function.
22. A unified interface for humans in gnome configuration (not gconf-editor)
23. Able to replace Qt file dialog wherever necessary. Help improve qgtk, especially with rounded scrolling buttons.
24. Improve transparancy --- Qt is getting ahead of us.
25. An integrated native office suite, not openoffice.org, not abiword, but, gnumeric + ? + ? + . . .
26. vector icons everywhere
27. Able to daemonize every application running.
28. Improve gnome-dictionary to support on-disk dictionary format, and support for wikis (go beyond dictd) and possibly make it a desktop-wide service.
29. Able to launch website as applications (like Prism, Adobe AIR, . . .)
30. Make evolution start faster, it almost rival openoffice.org in the aspect . . .
31. Support for more archive formats, like tlzma, pax, for archive mounting (And please have archive available in /media/* but not ~/.gvfs/* )
32. The last one --- just hope --- unify with kde in underlying frameworks. Maybe there're some other I have left over . . . Feel free to ask questions about each item . . .

The most I want be improved in Gnome 3.0 was the top bar(gnome-panel) and the file manager(nautilus).
I like use compiz-fusion with dock, cairo-dock was a very good but I want a dock which is from gnome not from others because the style was very different and the look also has some different. I also like the globe menu bar like Mac OS, I think this can be a option for the one who need. I know that have people who doesn't like Gnome look like Mac OS.
And I think nautilus need to be improved a lot, Just like the preview function, pictures can work perfectly but movies are not. Always the movies can not be preview. I also want a function that like the music files, move the mouse on it can preview the movies in nautilus. The speed also is a problem of nautilus, it always become no respond.
Finally, I just want a fast, use less memory and beautiful gnome. I think gnome can make some part be optional, let user choose what that want to install. And make gnome become more flexibility.

integrate gnome-do into gnome

abandon composite, but to integrate compiz-fusion into gnome since it is maturer and there is no need to do repeated work(gnome is not openbox). (I don't think kwin effects is easily reached by metacity) When get a fusion, they can work more seamlessly (drivers is not the barricade, we can set a option as ubuntu to enable compiz or not)
I think it's a win-win choice for gnome and compiz-fusion.

enrich the functions in mouse right click -- so it is a choice to hide menu in panel as enlightenment.

enrich gadget -- now I am distressed with opensuse 11.1 + python 2.6 + no gdesklets

More compelling panel maybe.

Adjust to the current user - not a "generic" one based on a sociological survey ;-) You simply can't sum up and to a mean of users without alienating most of them.

E.g. Have an option to remove main menu and use gnome-do (minimize moving the hand from keyboard to mouse all the time). I hate losing focus while I type (even if this does not happen as much as a few years ago) or when I can't see a keyboard shortcut to an UI task I want to do.

Then I suppose the shell should also be usable without using any keyboard too (for my mirror-self ;-) e.g. mouse and/or touchscreen only.

At first sorry for my bad english!
At second let me say a very big thanks for gnome to all developers :)

I think gnome need some small/big improvment and polish for a better usability, but its still the best DE :).

I. Nautilus search : Its must to be more representative i mean i want to serch for a file and iam a simple user i click on search button an the search is run in the folder where iam. I think a popup or something can be good too choose the search place.
I mean :
1.search in this folder
2.filesystem
3.this drive that drive, home etc...

The simple users dont know whats happening.
When the nautilus seraching i need some progressbar or something to see whats happening how search is going now i just see an animation on the right corner what is tell me nothing about whats happening.
So a littlebit more representative and more usable search.

II. In Nautilus let simple user see the free space always. If I click on a folder or a file the freespace text gone. Why? Let users see and know always this info. Its important! Its ok on statusbar i think.

III. Select multiple files. Yes the old developers and "skilled" users know how to select multiple files. But simple users dont. I try the kde's dolphin its solve this problem. So I prefer the Dolphin way in Nautilus. A little icon on the right up side with a +,- icon can be pretty good.

IV. The size of the controls. I use gnome on destop laptop and on netbook too. On a desktop i use a big resolution 1680x1050(I mean big for me) every control is close to good size(a little bigger :]) . But on my laptop and netbook the resolution is smaller. Here comes the controls the buttons, text boxes, fonts ,toolbar icons are simply too big.
I prefer a slider under the themes or somewhere in the theme changer app to resize all controls (icons in nautilis) with the fonts or one by one. Like under the mouse cursor menu. If I change the dpi its just change the fonts size but not the icons size dont change. Let the all controls size can be changed at one place in easy way. Maybe automatically change controlls size to resolution size?

V. Some new professional theme and new(scalable where not now)icons against or next the old ones(where its need).

Any other good usable idea dont come in our mind :)

Thanks for the Gnome.

Best Regards:

There are some group of Grids, I can define program shortcuts in grids, and also define type in every group.
eg. define Group 1 as Internet, There are 'Firefox' shortcut etc.. in the 'Internet' {group 1}

If want to know detail, you can use google search for more.

I think it is very good for us.
We can use the hot key to open the 'Turbolunch', and search the program shortcut which we need and is grouped by.

It can save my time.

Possible improvements:

- offer new ways to switch between opened windows: something like OS X "Exposé" triggered by a keyboard shortcut would be greatly welcomed. I know its available in Compiz and I don't want to use that, but should be implemented as a Gnome feature already.

- unifying some important keyboard shortcuts. For instance some apps can be closed using Ctrl+W, others with Ctrl+Q and all of them also use Alt+F4. Since Alt and F4 are so far away, I prefer to use something with Ctrl but depending on the app I have to use either Q or W with it. Make it consistent already !!

In one word, Gnome 3 should provide more usability: focus on the basics and provide ways to be efficient in everyday use.
Keyboard shortcuts, keyboard shortcuts, keyboard shortcuts !!

There are very few things that bother me with the current version of Gnome. But integration with a few apps is disappointing. For example, when downloading a link in firefox, if the file-type is associated with a program (but meme type isn't established), firefox opens a nautilus dialog allowing you to search the file system (i.e. you have to go to /usr/bin to find the associated program). My point is that a few things could be done to allow for easy integration between apps. In my example, it would be much easier to have firefox open a dialog with a menu that's essentially the Applications menu, listing all the main apps. Gnome can easily do this without alienating power users who don't won't an eye-candy interface.

My one other complaint relates to modern graphics. Simply said, Gnome needs to make the transition to SVG graphics. Beyond that, consistency needs to be a priority. For example, on the desktop I might have a few PDF files, a couple of Docs, and a few videos. Each file-type has a different icon size. The PDFs have a small preview, the mp3s have an icon associated with music, etc. A consistency in icon size would go a long way.

Firstly, focus on rock solid stability. That may involve deprecating some older libraries and starting a new side project for a "compatibility library" to dump the cruft to. For Gnome as a whole, this needs to be done in a way so that ALL distributions benefit without inconsistent (or consistent) "breakages" between distros. End users don't care about the technical background/reason, they want things to work and work properly. A flaky distro using Gnome as the default interface does injustice to the distro reputation itself, Linux as a whole and the entire Gnome project (since that is what they can see and can't always seperate the difference between UI, OS and distro). Perhaps a method of ensuring stability is some sort of unified compatibility testing suite/script which would cover basic/core Gnome functionality and beyond (taking "desktop" use into consideration). This could save time with dealing with bug reports for both Gnome and the distros out there as problems would not be pushed out to the masses, be it final or even beta stage. Whatever technical choices (and design) that are made should be both good for the developers and good for the user. Good technical choices make it easier for developers to understand, work with and maintain. The user should be unaware and not have to understand anything remotely technical or how elegantly designed (code/infrastructure) Gnome is.

Secondly, focus on performance improvements and memory usage. If it involves a complete re-write of something, so be it (ie. Gnome Terminal). It's a good thing netbooks entered the market to remind us what it's like to work with limited resources, as well as a collapsed economy (sort of). Even as specs improve, we should still focus on speed and efficiency and not take it for granted. Maybe a small project to start with is to reduce resource usage of the gnome-applets, be it the applets themselves and/or infrastructure.

A completely new interface/overhaul may be in order, however there should be a fallback option to the "familiar" current Gnome as we know it, be it a hotkey or clicking on an applet icon. That is especially the case for people in situations where a major change in interface can't happen or some unknown/unexpected compatibility issue may arise. Don't make compositing a mandatory requirement. Make any eye-candy/animations lightweight and as efficient as possible. Also take into consider the unfortunate future that monitors on desktops and note/net/books may be lower resolution and wide screen. Perhaps a scalable widget theme is best to accommodate the possibilities/preferences of the individual. We have low resolution small and large screens... as well as high[ish] resolution small screens. It is time for a new spec for adjustable "white space" so we don't continue to create a clutter of the multiple theme variants. Any power hungry eye-candy/animations should be broken out as an extension with a common library to access other means of acceleration if available (GPU). If a notebook user has any eye-candy enabled, provide some ability to have different eye-candy profiles based on environmental factors (AC power? 90% battery remaining? 50% or 30% remaining?). Based on usage history, gnome-power-manager may be able to calculate how much [extra] battery life eye-candy is consuming, which the user should also know about.

A new interface needs to be flexible enough to accommodate usage patterns of students, office and "power-user" use. Any major/drastic changes need a lot of time, consideration and [public] trials before. The pros and cons of all new ideas should be evaluated.

How about delaying Gnome 3.0 more, experiment with the 2.2{4,6} already in place, focus mostly on fixing critical bugs and work on Gnome 3.0 in parallel. A good finished product is well worth the wait. A broken/half baked/rushed product will do no good to Gnome and the entire open source community as a whole. Although I may crave the latest, I should be happy that what I'm using now and "stuck" with is reliable and working.

I've been using Gnome since 1.x. I hope you guys can work towards the speeds I remember back in the day, consider how we've stepped up to such "modern" hardware nowadays (and :stepped back" with the introduction of netbooks). Gnome used to be much more slender in the past in terms of CPU and memory usage. It seems as [modern] hardware has barely made up for inefficiencies.

In two ways: getting a little lightweight would definitely help a lot. For example Nautilus is a very bloated file manager, PCManFM and even Thunar do a great while being more lightweight than Nautilus. The second thing is the look. I know how it should not be improved ! Not KDE STYLE 4.
DON'T DROP ON US MAJOR CHANGES. Drip them in carefulley, and let us decide how we want to use them.
Personally, I use a lot of keyboard shortcuts, so i don't like using the menus. I launch prorgrams with ALT+f2 most of the time. Some people like gnome-do for that. But I find the menus organized well and nicely for new users I introduce to linux. Also, I dislike searching for items, i.e SUSE style or KDE4. I find it counter intuitive that I have to search for program. Instead a well structured menu like gnome's is guiding me or new users. So although it takes lot's of screen property GNOME aplications-places-system menu is very good in my opinion. And I would like to see it staying.
In terms of using more space, some people in UBUNTU are working on the Mac style changing upper bar. This is indeed valuable, and would be nice to have it as an option for upcoming gnome versions.

Honestly? Just keep it simple, tidy and efficient. The graphics are great and sober. Everything works well.

Please, please stay out of all of that awful and unproductive eye-candy mess that KDE got itself into.

The only thing that annoys me is the fact that, sometimes, freshly-installed programs do not show up in the applications menu. And it's somewhat time-consuming setting up a link by ourselves.

Lastly, I've notice that I tend to insert some of my favorite nautilus scripts into the right-click menu. Although it's quite easy to do, some more options to start with would be nice.

So from my point of view there are some very good ideas for gnome 3.0 like Zeitgeist. I know A LOT of people who always call me, just to ask where they put their files because they can't remember. So Zeitgeist wouldnt only need to be able to look for that chronologically, but also like tagging or group searches or stuff like that.

For gnome shell, I must say I tried it out and dislike it. The problem with it is somehow that if you just "play" with your computer then everything is fine. But it gets so much into your way if you need real workflow.

Areas to improves are for my point of view clearly Nautilus, Metacity, theming (gnome works good, but looks like 20 years old)

Speed and stability over features.

Wide screens have taken over, and top-to-bottom space is at a premium. Move info/panels to the side.

Bring back short-cut key remapping for menus (make it easy to enable).

Context search is overrated (but not totally useless). Find-utils/Locate is awesome. Integrate THAT into nautilus.
Speaking of Nautilus: it is slow. it is not easy to customize (adding Send-To options?). it still crashes. (I envy KIO Slaves in KDE3, but that's the only thing I envy in KDE.)

Tweaking app settings in GConf is still not too user friendly. It should be as friendly as an apps "preferences".

Gnome menus... are not too bad now. I just rarely use them. I tend to know programs by their name (ex: I look for 'pidgin', not 'chat'. I use three different 'web browser' programs. ), and Alt-F2 type-it-in, or create a short-cut on a side-panel. (copying to/from menus/panels is very cool.)
Wine integration into Gnome menus doesn't seem to work too well (which is probably a wine issue).

3D-desktops are cute, but I don't need it (and still buggy enough that they stay turned off.)

If Gnome goes the plug-in route for features, a testing framework for plug-ins would be heavenly (if the plug-in developers would actually use it,... which means the testing framework would have to be KISS and damn-fool-proof.)

(not really a desktop issue, but maybe gnome-vfs) Still using /home over NFS.

I can think of a few things:
- Make shortcuts work when menu's are open
- Consistent copy-pasting as described by Raskin in The Humane Interface
- Integrate Gnome-do
- Default to one panel (I'd prefer a top panel)
- Make organizer separate from evolution and light-weight or add a light-weight alternative to evolution
- Clean up the main menu, especially the System tab. Put logical groups like keyboard and mouse stuff together as it is done on a Mac.
- Add an optimize button to the window border buttons a la Mac.
- Fix the sometimes quirky behavior (i.e. sudden moving) of panel applets
- Make separate wallpapers possible on multi-head configurations.
- Make it possible to unmount drives from the panel menu instead of having to open nautilus
- Allow file management in the save and open dialogs. It looks like nautilus so it should behave as such. Requiring a user to open nautilus separately is not helpful
- Make programs more integrated but their UI's more independent, for example, when I open a menu in open office and then switch to another app, the menu closes. This makes no sense since I did not request that to happen.
- Make it possible to alt-tab when dragging
- The new volume control app is awesome, but we should add the volume of the independent programs under the main volume so it's more at hand

The zeitgeist and gnome shell thing may be too much of a change in the user interface. If people complained about folder view in KDE4, what are they going to say when they see much more radical changes to the UI in Gnome 3.0? I'd like Gnome to be prettier, with more transparencies and effects. One missing feature is a dialog box that tells the user which file has been more recently modified when overwriting files with the same name in the same folder. Even Windows is better at that.Victor

I love the idea of having an integrated search for menuitems in each program. That would be really amazing (if accessing it with a keybinding was available of course; it should also be always-visible, no popups). A better run dialog is also much needed. Also the ability to (batch) tag the files and then browse them based on their metadata (that is tags, creation date etc.) would be fantastic (zeitgeist maybe?).Giorgos Retsinas

.

Improved window navigation. If you have multiple windows open in a workspace (multiple == 6-15 or more on a given workspace), Alt+Tab is _slow_ and annoying.

Throw in tab-oriented applications like Gedit, Epiphany, Firefox, MonoDevelop, etc., and _finding_ the document you want is often difficult.

What I want is _global_ Find By Name functionality -- hit a shortcut key, start typing some text, and somehow get a list of all windows AND tabs which match the search string.

Think of it as an MonoDevelop's Search -> Go To File functionality on steroids.

(Or think of it as a version of deskbar-applet's Window Switcher tool that (1) works -- often deskbar-applet won't find a window that I know is there, and (2) also finds tabs, not just title bar text.)

Unfortunately the "look at tab text" functionality will likely require some degree of app integration, but it would be _really_ handy.

(The alternative of "don't have that many windows open" is a non-starter. Development requires lots of tabs and windows.)

I think a little more functionality won't hurt. It can be hidden behind "Advanced" button, or maybe something similar to Windows new control panel look (I know gnome is not aiming to look like windows, but why shouldn't we use the good ideas). The second option is not my favorite, but many people will appreciate the simplicity behind it.
Then comes the visual look. There are many themes and gtk engines and stuff, but still I think a better overall look can be achieved beating the looks of WIndows 7 for example.
I don't know if it's just me, but I kind a feel that the menus could be more responsive. there could be some more performance optimizations mainly to the file operations. I like the integration of gnome and nautilus, but most of the other file browsers are faster than nautilus.
Next thing could be some more modularity end extensibility, like for example a better support for plugins in nautilus could be nice. I am sure many of you have used Total Commander with its many plugins, the split windows and the ability to open almost anything wit hthe right plugins. I kind a would like to see something similar in gnome. You could also take Firefox plugins for example. Although Total Commandeer is a better example here, because its plugins no matter how many they are don't take more memory, or make it slower.
From the design part would be good to have the ability to use some unordinary forms like elipses, rings etc.. This square look is getting kind a boring. Of course a designer here could say how this should look without being too cluttered and disfunctional, but definitely something could be done.
Lastly I should say that the maturity of the software should be improved. There should be as less inconsistency and crashes as possible.
I hope I wasn't too critical. I really like what you are doing with Gnome. Keep up the good work.

Show off on my desktop, and do it in the most unobtrusive way possible: it needn't be with wobbly windows and flashy cubes, just a nice, well structured, and well worded desktop and I'll be happy. Help me find what I need.

The general feel of window contents needs to be slicker, I've seen, but not used, the animations in OSX, wherein, I think, a box with semi-important info needing a response slides from the window decoration -- it's nicer than a dialog or notification.
Gnome-do like language functionality for just typing want you want would be excellent inside applications -- why go rooting for something when you can just ask and have it given.

Our desktop's look is customizable, so use the variety that the community provides: go with some solid, pleasant artwork but also provide the choice of putting my own touches easily. I don't want to supply a hex code or dive into complex colour-picker: I want to choose "green" or "red" not "now define variations hereof".

Have similar things work in the same way, why does my music player pause it this way and my video player in another; more functional animations, morphing alert-box like dialogs which consolidate pop-up window after pop-up window (tried to install a codec recently?) into a single instance; better-looking elements in GTK, a better consistent use of typeface boldness and italics in dialogs; and less dialogs. In short, a simplified consistent pleasant interface supplemented with animations would go along way. Stricter interface guidelines, I say.

More emphasis on workspaces -- needs to be prominently featured to encourage people to use them.

Better feedback everywhere; more integration everywhere.
Help me to use my desktop, help me find out how to make my work easier, show me to resolve my problems; error, how dare it.

-"Run command" and "Search" options in main menu by default
-Less "flat" interface
-Transparency
-Compositing without compiz
-More customizable desktop

By making Shell awesome. Make it fast. Make it usable. Make it customizable. Tried the version in SVN a few weeks back and it felt rigid and clunky, but I'm sure things will improve. :)Jacob Peddicord

.

Configurable focus (should allow certain programs, which are configurable, to steal focus).

Configurable window properties (customize window properties like position, workspace, etc. based on their names, classes, etc.).

Better Theme by default and better GDMAnonymous

Better Desktop with easier theming :) More usable and yet better looking.. Not making it resource hungry :P

Better applications UI, and better file manager and improve everything :D

Centralized configuration, setting options at top panel.
More convenient file manager.
Maybe, a faster response speed

Better underneath structure, good APIs and smarter daemons, and easy to understand calling conventions. Metacity really needs some update and/or better, advanced config utility.

As an end user everything is where it should be.

Better handling of accidential clicking and dragging, especially in the panels. (e.g. accidentially moving the top panel to another edge, certain applets (like the clock) that stay in the foreground when clicked and don't close when activating another window) These things should be easier to undo.

A clipboard that doesn't automatically lose its contents when the source window closes. (i.e. something like Glipper, but more "native")

Always keep basic UI controls fast even when the system is low on memory and swapping a lot, so that e.g. the user quickly can close misbehaving programs.
Stian Ellingsen

.

1. More polished icons, like what OpenOffice project did moving from v2 to v3.
2. Desktop widgets ala Windows7.
3. Something like MacOS' stacks.

More configurabilityAnonymous

.

Make it more modular so that I can choose other alternatives to some applications without fetching so many dependencies. I also would like to see gnome-do as default in a gnome instalation and better configuration. A few applications could be improved: network configuration, screen resolution configuration (it's way too basic).
I'm happy with the gnome top panel, but maybe the panel applets could be improved (aka more flexibility to make completely different applets)
Carlos

.

integrate a clipboard manager to fix the copy/paste issue (really annoying)
integrate a compiz like window manager, similar to Kwin for KDE
new default theme..
double-panel + easy NFS mounting for the file manager
something similar to quicklook in mac would be great (something that can open any file for quick preview in read-only)
better use of hotkey to launch programs

Don't over simplify. Over simplification leads to people not learning how to accomplish more complicated tasks that really require learning. Sometimes people have to take the time to learn how to really do something. Over simplification leads to a "windows" type crowd that accomplishes nothing and sits cursing at their PC or not using it's full potential.

Also please keep dependencies for add on programming packages like Mono, Java etc., clean, so people can choose what to remove and keep alternative program coding active and vibrant.

an application software supports video chat with windows usersAnonymous

.

Three areas I'd like to see enhancements/improvements...
(1) Windows "familiarity" mode - Make it easier for non-technical users who are used to Windows (like my wife) to find things. For example, give them the ability to easily create a "C_Drive" directory, etc. The way things are now, my wife has a terrible time finding things on a home Linux PC, and it's mostly because she isn't used to the Linux file system structure. I don't think we should have Drive letters like in Windows, but if we create a directory with a name like "H_drive" and make it intuitive and easy to create these references/links that would go a long way to driving acceptance.

(2) Add "predictive" and "context-sensitive" application and menu items. So based on my application selection history, Gnome should remember what apps I not only use recently, but also what files/folders/applications when I'm doing activity XYZ. For example, if I always open application (browser) or a certain file while I have my email client open, those apps/files should be "suggested" to me.

(3) Desktop widgets - give me the ability to have small and web services based widgets on my desktop... everything from a favorite RSS feed to a clock to a web page
Kevin Chin

.

Tighter integration of core gnome programs.
Rework primary user interface to seamlessly link with various sources - local files, web, etc.
Max Volume

.

Universal control panel (with search), Integrated widgets, better application synergyRyan Swart

.

Good Lite Note taking widget.

better evolution stability ( specially with huge no. of mails ).

KDE 4 like start menu ? i'm not sure if this is good.

flexibility and better customisation & themes support .

Increase Desktop performance ( specially gnome start up - takes more than 90 second to get the desktop on 4 GB RAM + 2 GB 64Bit AMD X2 Dual Core processor and ATI Radeon 3200 proprietary driver).

a good tool that can clean bloated home directory and gnome settings ( maybe some thing like safe-mode ).

whatever you do don't have windows that I don't open appear in my windows list automatically (like ubuntu has for update notification in jaunty). Windows popping up (or under) may have good uses but it wrecks my work flow (I like to have complete control over my workspace. After all it's my workspace and my computer). It would also be great if nautilus could get undo functionality. I think the icons in the panels could be prevented from jumbling up when I change resolution and change back. Other than that I think that gnome is best DE for its' ease of use and letting me get to work without hassle. Sorry for the complaints, keep up the good work, i know you'll do great. Brian Olsen

.

Improve workflow by helping (even propose with directory names whosen from dates) places to store files and methods to retreive those files (Zeitgeist is a must have IMHO). Maybe adding a tag to specify which program created a file would help as well.

Having a kind of special place to store temporary files would be welcome (for example I need to include a scanned file in a document, then the scanned file is only a tmp file in that workflow). Even add a "Teporary files" entry in the file selector?

.

I use a WM to let me alt-tab between terminals and a web browser, and use an IM program effectively (system tray, alert on new messages, chat windows that exist across workspaces so on). So given this usage pattern, I just want it to remain simple and usable.

One feature I would like is to have a all windows in a workspace tugged out somewhere and then brought back when needed.

One more thing would be to have light-weight version of gnome-terminal, which should essentially be a rxvt-unicode with full support for indic scripts. (Light weight meaning, no tabs/menus required just the term with proper indic script input (scim) and output (pango)
Koushik Narayanan

.

Avoid any dependency on mono.
Clear up the mess with GVFS - "everything is a file" is clearly broken when you can see files in nautilus but not open them.
Work with distributions to help them avoid breaking or not using GNOME components (e.g. the clipboard history applet which crashes on startup in Ubuntu)
Keep up the good work!

Improved desktop search capabilities, like searching for file, and as context search must suggest me apps with wich i can open this file, web sites from which i downloaded this file et. etc.. Look and feel should be more costumizable, some of applications more lightweight, faster startup time for core programs, lke nautilus and gedit. Roman

.

Get rid of Mono dependency. It's a Microsoft patent trap and redundant technology anyway.

Use GNote instead of Tomboy.

You could provide something like Humanized Enso/Mozilla Labs Ubiquity, either as modified Deskbar or new app. That means functionality mashups of local programs and less clicking around.

Conduit: make Evolution sync with OpenMoko. Make Evolution sync across computers in local network, ie. without third-party server/service. Make Epiphany history/bookmarks sync across computers.

Evolution printing:

-Allow for choosing size/fonts of columns when printing tasks. so you can print more/less on one page
-Allow for printing calendar for specific time-frame(from-to), not just current view
-Make printing tasks in daily calendar optional
-Allow for 2page-a-week print layout for calendar.

Epiphany: use Gnome keyring for storing passwords. Add Tor (The onion routing)

Tracker: extend search to Evolution/Thunderbird/mailbox/maildir e-mails, Firefox/Epiphany bookmarks/history, Liferea newsfeeds, Rhythmbox music/podcasts, Evolution contacts, tasks and memos.

Make a central database/xml file for OpenSearch engines and make it easily acessible for programs that might want to use it, like Epiphany searchbar like one in Firefox, Deskbar search and Gnome-do.

Looking at the plans to use Gnome Shell and Zeitgeist, the ideas look interesting already.

Currently, I launch the four programs I use most from an icon on the taskbar in one click. It would be a pity to lose this.

I find the Gnome 2 applications menu gets so full that it is hard to locate applications quickly and having no ability to place launchers for frequently used applications which don't quite warrant a place on my toolbar near the top of the applications menu is a bind.

I use only a single panel placed at the top in Gnome 2.0, sized at 24 pixels. Having a wide screen laptop, I could lose working space from the sides but hate losing working space from the height.

I would hope that Gnome 3 will be as resource light as possible for the features. My Core 2 T7400 often seems unresponsive under Gnome 2.

Gtk 2 looks old and clunky in comparison to QT4 and toolkits on other platforms, so the use of clutter or other technologies to spruce up the look and hopefully the rendering speeds seems like a good plan.

It can have more options, like ones in gconf, but in GUI (panels, nautilus...)

Many users are using compiz-fusion. Have that in mind. Make it easy for compiz to integrate with Gnome.

You are doing a great job! :)

It should preserve it's layout, but improve the performance, and resolve the exisiting bugs,Gnome in his current state is perfect, but a little tweak on it's look and on handling icons in menus when their look is changed(ex. after you change the look of an icon, and you uninstall that program the icon remains in the menu),as for the look, some themes like murrine, and icons like Elementary should be used.Rhythmbox could use some improvements to,like not starting with my entire collection on start up,and an equalizer;it would be perfect if Gnome could run on older machines!Marius Timu

More theming capabilities (the CSS idea is an interesting one); Full RGBA Support; Less dependency on Mono; A Bookmarks/Locations manager (similar to Firefox Bookmark Manager?); Ability to import/export Gconf values/settings for transferring or sharing; Integrate Gconf Editor with Control Centre?; And finally, please, please, please give the Sawfish guys a hand to further integrate it into the new Desktop :)Jason D. Some of items(such as the menu and button) is a little big, so the inteface of some softwares seems to be not clear enough. I holp the items of gnome can be a littile smart, then more items can be showed in one screen, and then the program can make full use of my screen. thanks ^_^ZhangMingWei
