We discussed on IRC whether Straw should be part of the official GNOME Desktop. Already, Straw is a feed reader for the GNOME desktop, but it would benefit from more integration with the desktop and the community. Further, as a part of GNOME Desktop, more people would be exposed to it as a solution to feed reading.

The challenges are in meeting the GNOME standards for official modules, and showing that Straw is important enough to belong in the limited scope of GNOME Desktop. Being written in Python doesn't seem to be an issue anymore. Meanwhile, the solutions to feed reading have grown from simple desktop feed readers, and although Straw can easily evolve with Python and a good architecture, it has been lagging behind times.

From IRC log

  • <janm> i think that the concensus was if the application is useful enough and a lot of users would like to have it then it will probably be included

<DrFrasierCrane> I say focus on quality of the application, and things like inclusion in gnome will come naturally

<DrFrasierCrane> ... I think there's still a lot of people that just want a separate application for feeds

<janm> a lot of users i not enough. a lot of happy users can be

<tuukkah> ... i think [we should] try to turn straw into a type of app that hasn't been done before and which most gnome users recognize they want to have and most gnome developers think is cool

<DrFrasierCrane> but I myself first want to do some work on the basics like bugs and adhering [to standards set by other rss readers] (to some extent)
