The Metal Engine was originally created for GTK1.2 to try and bridge the gap of Java based apps not being able to integrate into the desktop. It exists as a way of giving GTK apps the Java Metal look.

Somewhat obsolete now that recent versions of Java can be themed to some extent to match the GTK themes, it nevertheless is still available for those who must use older versions, or simply prefer the type of look.
