One frequent request is a way to browse the backup files and retrieve individual files that way.

Something like Time Machine's browser.

It would let you see which files are in a backup, change the date you're looking at, etc.

I'd love ideas on what this should look like before I start thinking about the technical aspects.

Note that any design should plan on lots of latency accessing the data/metadata.
